Thanks for the information.

One question: If qualifying for a CM requires a Fide rating upwards of 2000 or 2200, as is stated here, then how come so many 1700+ players bear that title?

Thanks.

The possibility I think of is that they got the CM title, but then had few bad tournaments and lost a ton of rating.

If you mean 1700 on chess.com, then that's easy. The two ratings are not dependent on each other.

Granted, but you surely wouldn't expect a FIDE CM to be rated 1700 on this site, and I have seen numerous CM's well below 2000; I've even beaten one once and I'm just a patzer.

Wikipedia defines CM as "Similar to FM, but with a FIDE Rating of at least 2200."

I find that rather curious. :/

FIDE titles are meaning less and less because they give away many titles that are not actually earned . A kid say under 12 can become FM without having the 2300 fide rating by just winning a kids only event in which there arent even any FMs playing , this is one reason you will see very weak titled players . Its a joke really.

OK. I guess that explains it then. Could be that they're more generous in awarding the lesser titles, in order to stimulate interest and motivate players. Who knows?

Thanks, NM Reb. :)

Women's titles are a complete joke.

I played against a girl who was 1800 or so in a tournament, and she was making sure everyone knew that she was a WIM.

Beating her was fun, especially when her parents were there making faces at me for winning.

Look at some examples, these are some ways to get the CM title:

At these tournaments:

Continental Amateur
Cont. & Regional U10; U8
Cont. Schools U11; U9; U7

World U10; U8
World Schools U11; U9; U7

In order to get the CM you have to get:

1st equal, Silver & Bronze - title

With these tournaments you can also get the FM title:

Cont. & Regional U14; U12
Cont. Schools U17; U15; U13

World U12
World Schools U17; U15; U13

gold gives you the FM title and silver and bronze the CM title:

Gold – title

Silver & Bronze – title

The olympiads are a special case:

CM is

50% in min 7 games - title

and

FM is

65% in min 9 games - title

Double standards indeed. Very strange, and more so since the titles granted are valid for life.

Why not issue junior titles instead? Like JFM, or JCM.

This way of doing it only gives credence to what NM Reb said.

these are all good titles but my advice is to go for the new FIDE Official Arena Titles and particularly the FIDE Arena Grandmaster title. Its always better to say you are a grandmaster than just a national master!

That sounds like a great idea...I'm sure we'd all want to give money to a corrupt organization in return for a worthless title, while at the same time putting our computers and sensitive information at risk. What could possibly go wrong? Undecided

I think I found AY's weak spot. Every time someone attacks his beloved FIDE, he drops his trollish act and gets deadly serious. Laughing

Doesnt it seem off that the women's titles are lower? are they expecting them to be dumber than men? May be true, but sooner or later the feminists are going to get mad.

Women play less in tournaments than men. They are trying to popularize it for women by making it easier to get titles.

Why would you pick wikipedia to prove me wrong when some of that stuff is false anyway. Get the info from a more resouresful site. Like I said there is no WCM. I have women chess players in the area I use to live and they said the same I'm sure they would know.
