Played this variant for the first time and my rating was almost 1500!
How and why?

That's not how ratings work. They don't compare to each other.
Having said that, websites generally try to make it so they're close, and also so that they're similar to FIDE, but all of that is artificial. 1500 doesn't itself imply a certain level of skill, it only means you'll win about 3 out of 4 against someone who is 1300 and win about 1 out of 4 vs someone who is 1700. 1500 could be a beginner or a grandmaster depending on how the administrators set up the initial rating and what kinds of players choose to play.
