Free chess engine?

Sort:
check2008

I'm a premium member here on chess.com and am sad to see there's no way to get our games analyzed unless they're played on chess.com (either live or online). Thus I'm tempted to create another account (check2008_games) or something like that and use two different computers to play through the games in live chess and then analyze them.

But of course that seems like too much work! Certainly there's a FREE program out there that will take care of this problem? Even a free trial of software would be great. I've Google searched to no avail - all searches of "chessbase free trial" or "fritz trial" or whatever have all come up nothing.

Thanks for the help!

Arena (free) combined with Houdini 1.5 (free downloadable from Houdini wepsite)

Just to give you a choice, check2008, some users prefer Scid or Scid v. PC to Arena.   Also free;  lots of prior discussion in the forums about both if you'd care to do a search.   I have my Houdini 1.5 hooked up to Fritz 12 and can certainly recommend it as an "all you'll probably ever need" engine.

Here's a link to a free phone app for it... I think there is one for Apple devices but I'm not sure what it's called. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pereira.analysis

This is the correct response Cool

On one side of the coin we have all these people looking for free membership, free downloads, free databases, free apps, On the other side of the coin we have GM who can't make a living.

Stockfish is basically tied with Houdini right now for being the world's strongest engine and it's looking like it's about to become #1 very soon.  Houdini is a commercial engine so the free version you can download is significantly weaker than either the version of Houdini at the top or Stockfish.  Arena is a good program but it's incredibly unintuitive to use at the beginning and it lacks the massive amounts of features a program like Scid vs. PC has.

"On the other side of the coin we have GM who can't make a living."
Last time I checked it's programmers who develop GUIs and engines, not GMs.

And those GMs played no role whatsoever in the development of chess.com (btw there is no free membership unless you're a titled member) or the downloads, databases or apps that all those people are looking for.

RonaldJosephCote

Again Macer, your taking it out of context. I posted that 3 weeks ago, for different reasons.  GM's can't make a living, because your friends are breaking copyright laws on the other thread about free downloadable books for people who are rated 2200+. The thread is entitled, "books for 2200+". Why don't you point that out to the staff, so you can keep your free membership for another 5 yrs.

macer75

First of all, how am I supposed to know what the context is when nobody on the thread even mentioned it? The best assumption I could make was that the context was this thread alone.

Second of all, I just checked that thread, and the only person who posted a free download link was the CM guy, who I barely know. I assume that if you're telling me to report him, then that means that you've reported him yourself already, so if chess.com thinks anything needs to be done it will do something.

Third, what does me reporting him have to do with being able to keep my free membership? I can keep it for as long as I want until a. I get banned, b. chess.com goes bankrupt, or c. one day chess.com requires all members to subscribe. And that's in order from most likely to least likely.

RonaldJosephCote

Ya,know what Macer?; you win. you got me. I just thought if you reported him for some brownie points, the staff might say,"good boy". I don't have to report him. JimmyKay already did. The context 3 weeks ago had to do with technology. The context today has to do with GM's not making any money because nobody wants to BUY the book, they just want to steal it.  One last piece of advice; don't download anything that is free, because you get what you pay for.

yah, right, there's a huge market for chess books. I have trouble meeting anybody who is interested in chess, let alone who knows that there is such thing as a chess book. Sorry, man GMs not making a living has nothing to do with people not buying chess books. I have a book by Chernev, a book by Lou Hays, a  book by Blackburne, and a book by Horowitz and Reinfeld. Given that probably 3 if not 4 of those 4 are dead, I certainly haven't supported any GMs livelihood.

RJC, you are the most obnoxious troll I have met on this site. Some are just ridiculous, some are sometimes funny, some are mean,  you are totally objectionable.

RonaldJosephCote

Since you don't give any examples like your Shananski post, I won't worry about totally objectionable. I'm trying to point out that a lot of GM's steal from other GM's in terms of copyright. Check some other chess sites. They also can't make a living at it, because like bowling, and freezby, its not that important. I'm willing to pay for the're books, but like albums, I don't want a new cover slaped on old material.

I don't need to. You provide more than sufficent examples.

You clearly don't understand open source.  Stockfish is free, and worth more than all the engines that cost $$$.  WordPress is free, and powers 12% of the internet's websites.  Linux is free...etc.

As for GMs, they should count themselves only lucky that they can make money for playing a board game at all.  I don't see any Monopoly coaches ekeing out a living...

yes, and he also doesn't understand that 1. he is offensive to people who use chess.com and do not pay for memberships, 2. he doesn't understand that offering free use of the chess.com site is central to chess.com's marketing strategy 3. he doesn't understand that most internet income is made by ads and clicks, not by people paying for use of the site and 4. everything you listed about open source etc. He's not worth responding to. I put him on my blocked members within a day of first reading his posts.

Somebodysson can you unblock me from your massively popular "what the #*$*&" thread?  I really won't post in it, I'm just sick of looking at the notifications for it and I can't untrack it.

Lol.

actually, frommu2you. or is it 2mooroo? Yes, you three deserve each other. RonaldCote George Black and the inimitably immature 2mooroo. Enjoy yourselves. CryCryCry

Stockfish, Houdini, and Komodo are all very close at the top. But with Stockfish being free, there doesn't seem much point to getting the others.
