Fritz - online v. disc/download

Is there a difference between the Fritz 15 program which is available via download or disc compared to online version of Fritz 15 that I understand is available via Chessbase?   I am mostly interested in play and analysis functionality.

Thanks for any comments,

Thanks for any comments,

They should be equivalent, once you do the download to bring the disc version up to date.

Thanks notmtwain for the response.  Unfortunately I was not clear in framing my question.

I am interested in knowing whether using the online version of Fritz (which appears to be available as part of the playchess Chessbase membership) would be equivalent to using a version of Fritz which one has installed on one's own computer (installed by either using a disk or by actually downloading the program).

I am thinking of acquiring Fritz but may be moving to a Mac environment and if the online version (which does not require a Windows environment) is equivalent to the version that one would download to a Windows friendly computer, then that may assist in deciding on whether to switch to a Mac.    I have never used Fritz nor do I have a chessbase subscription, so I am really in the dark.

Nice to see a decent chess related question. However they will probably say you posted it in the wrong section! I have only used the disc version on Windows. I know Mac has issues with Fritz. It seems you are aware of this. I think you can try fritz online for free. I just had a go with my old iPad it was a bit slow then suddenly reloaded the page. : / So I don't know if it's the Chessbase end or mine. It would be very good to get fritz working smoothly on iOS

Thanks Hel-Reaper, I anticipate giving this a try within the next month or so and will update in case anyone may be interested.

the online version is more or less just a very thin version you can play against the real software has many more features and is not comparable at all. Which makes sence since otherwise noone would buy it anymore.

marpole, I would recommend buying Fritz on a CD/DVD. You won’t be tied to any specific PC or laptop that way. So, you’ll always have Fritz on both your laptop and PC – at the very least. It’s my favorite program and I have several of them. But I have to admit that analysis is nicer in ChessX (can be downloaded for free). It’s not because ChessX uses Stockfish which is a stronger engine; ChessX is much more convenient for analysis.

So, I’d recommend Fritz on a CD/DVD, and not necessary the newest version. I sometimes play against previous Fritz programs. For analysis I prefer ChessX for convenience. For analyzing already played games this website gives nice options in my opinion. And it allows you to save them in pgn so that you can use ChessX later on if you want to. As far as menus, looks and various options go, I consider Fritz to be the very best -- a must have program!

for analysis nothing is better than chessbase - no they don't pay me
