found this one...somewhat alike http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_chess
Futuristic 3D chess concept
i've seen that one too, actually, and it's completely different. http://www.chessvariants.org/3d.dir/startrek.html

Ill admit this is best 3D chess I have seen. That isn't saying a lot. Now, chess is a game that is easy to learn but difficult to master. It is easy to learn because it is simple. Adding a dimension always makes things more complicated and in this case unecesarily.

Oh and how do you promote pawns? Do they get promoted when they reach your opponent's starting point?
And if you really wanted to, you could play this game using two identical regular chess sets with the board laid end-to-end. Use the pieces from one set and the pawns from another. Just remember that the ends of the boards "wrap around" to the other side. Each side would start in the middle of one of the chess boards.

The other day i listened to a guy for about 30 minutes who claimed to have invented a new type of chess. He had a cylindrical board which was like two boards folded together to make a cylinder. The board could spin around, and was set up with two shown king-lines with the normal pieces on them. Each side had two pawn lines, in front and behind (ontop and under?) their kinglines. Also, the guy had invented some rule (i found it a little dumb) which allowed for each side to have 4 knights, and two started out connected..it was weird. The website for it is here :http://3mchess.com/ From there it just like normal chess. A very interesting concept, it opened up alot of cool possibilites. One reason I'm posting this is (the reason for the "claimed" up on sentence one) was because I was a little doubtful of this guy. By the way he talked about it, he didn't seem to know anything about chess. I could be wrong, but I felt like he hadn't actually come up with this.
Has anyone ever heard of a concept like this? I feel that it could very well already be one of the many specialty chess games. If so, please post and let me know!
much appreciated

"Ill admit this is best 3D chess I have seen." Thank you, Crudus, that made my day. I hope to be able to really push its promotion and go far with it.
