GEICO chess commercial

OK, there's very few commercials using chess that get a laugh, but the GEICO commercial with Andres Cantor giving the play by play is great.  Here's my question to someone who knows Spanish...what is he saying in the commentary?  Obviously I got the Goallllll, but is the stuff before that have anything to do with the game, or is he using soccer dialogue?  Thanks.

I wonder that too. It's a funny commercial!

It was a good commercial the first couple of times but then when he says "Goal" it gets annoying quite quickly.

He basically says, "He's thinking!  He's thinking!  It's coming!  It's coming!  Goal!!!"  There's a few other things in there I didn't catch.

Thanks a bunch.  For your first post, you've been very helpful.

And in the grand tradition of chess in popular media, the position shown in that commercial is illegal with two white bishops on the same color -- ok I can't see how many pawn there are so it's not technically illegal but you get the idea.

It's odd too because for the projection means there is chess software and other than the bishops the position looks passable as a real game in progress.  So to set up a such a position seems deliberate and yet we get two bishops on the same color.

Nice find Orange! I can't believe such a big company would let us such a serious (to us) error go unnoticed.

I was shocked when the board was oriented correctly.  I know it's a 50/50 chance for those who don't know how to set up a board, but oddly in the media it seems the bottom right corner will be black much more often than not.

It's hard to find chess shown correctly in TV/Movies.  Even in Harry Potter with Silman as a chess consultant, the first time you seem them playing chess the board is oriented incorrectly.  The 2nd time it's correct though (if I remember).

It's really quite a funny commercial, thanks to the prior post am just noticing the 2 light squared bishops also the knight takes the g4pawn but will loose the knight next turn, lol.

Ha sido una partida intensa hoy- (It’s been an intense match today)
Ya veremos qué está pensando- (Now we’ll see what he’s thinking)
Está pensando- (He’s thinking)
Veamos qué va a hacer- (Let’s see what he’s going to do)
¿Moverá a la reina o moverá al caballo?- (Will he move the queen or the knight?)
Qué tensión- (What stress)
Viene - (Here he comes)
Viene Viene Viene (Here he comes Here he comes Here he comes)
GOL! (Goal!)

That is for marketing purposes. It generates buzz among the chess circles.

I just now saw the commercial for the first time, so I found it pretty amusing---especially when the player shakes his head and looks at his opponent. lol I'm sure it won't take much for it to get old though. What I like is that it's a refreshing change from the gecco and the cave man!

Their attempts to be funny are exactly what make this commercial not funny. Actual play-by-play could be given in a much more realistic, engaging way than that annoying drivel (which, as some already agree, will get tiresome quickly. I saw it for the first time today, and it annoyed me extensively). Play-by-play does not always need to be noisy and verbose and in-your-face like World Cup soccer or American football. Tennis, golf, bowling, and billiards all have play-by-play announcers, and their comments conform to the atmosphere and mood of the game setting; they do not annoy with rambunctious, shrill play calling. I know that the unrealism of the scenario is what's supposed to make it funny... but when situations attempt to be funny through too much unrealism, it's not funny anymore.

Instead, knowledgeable chess players could possibly give in-game commentary in a number of ways: giving an impression of or criticizing a particular move, conveying surprise when an interesting or gutsy move is played, volunteering analysis and example lines at certain junctures, etc. I'm not sure that all this would be feasible, but they are just some thoughts.

Wow, you sure have a lot to say about a commercial.

Smile Umm... I suppose I do. I find many of them irritating, for diverse reasons. Maybe I shouldn't let them get to me... might help my overall mood.

sounds like a dvr would be a great birthday present for you

Did anyone notice the player at the end who gives the announcer the evil eye looks a *lot* like a young Kasparov? I wonder if that was intentional.

I was thinking John Turturro.  Great role in The Big Lebowski.. Quiz Show
