I don't understand why they chose this variation to be used. Why don't they just switch turns? The way they have it now looks like it is a "blackface" chess variation. It's like painting yourself black and playing the same moves.

What's wrong with this and having black play first?

It is the same as turning the board 90 degrees. Black's king is on the left whereas it should be on the right @GambitShift

Chess.com has recently added a new piece style to their selection in the options menu. Called "Black First" it essentially swaps the two colours around and allows "Black" to move first. It doesn't change anything about how the game is played and just changes the visuals of the peices.

What are your thoughts on this?

It's a great feature if your goal is to allow the possibility to confuse people...

P.S. - I thought you might be trolling about this, but I checked, and the site actually did this. Amazing...

P.P.S. - Let me elaborate - It shouldn't be confusing to the user, as he makes this choice of piece design on his own. However, the possible confusion arises when people start taking screen shots and posting screenshot images in forum posts.

180*

90 degrees would be too cold for the board

TerrorEyes666

I support this.

Go easy on him guys, it might just be his cat walking across his keyboard.

How does the notation work? Does it start with 1) .... D4 so that notation can still be followed if copy and pasted elsewhere?

Yes. The moves are numbered

1.d4 d5

2. Bf4 e6

etc..

@gambitshift I saw your post on firs page. if it were the way you said, it might mess up opening theory, your used seeing 1 e4 but then you see 1. e5! it might mess up all your opening theory because you memorize the notation, not necessarily the positions of the pieces.

Isn't that the point though? It would be a new game. It's a great metaphor. Why do we want minority groups to take on the same supremacy rights that the white man had? Why repeat the wrong? (supremacy wrongs)

You can already theme the pieces, so does that blue smurfs can now move first in this version?

The example you give looks like a normal game meaning a person looking at the game score without seeing the board would think it was a usual White moves first game.

My question is, now is it notated in the game score that Black went first? Is it even notated?

It isn't. It is essentially just a regular game of chess. Anyone viewing the game on another device will see it as a regular game where white moves first. The only thing it changes are the colour of the peices. So white still moves first but it just looks like white is black and black is white.

That was Wrong, This is Right!
