Idk, charge $10 for an hour i guess. Seems like a decent start for both sides.
how much should i charge to teach chess

Sure, if you don't want to be an overnight millionaire take Randomemory's advice. I've helped hundreds of coaches make millions... some of them at half your rating! Just take a look at these e-mails I get...
"Waffllemaster is the greatest. I was giving lessons at $10 an hour because some guy said it was a good start for both sides... I couldn't even afford toilet paper, but look at me now, I own 3 vacation homes and a private jet. Thanks again waffllemaster!"
Anyway, I left out the most important part of the secrets to millions... send a money order for $10 and I'll mail you a DVD with all the info. Money back guarantee* if you're not a millionaire in 3 months.
$70.00 postage due upon delivery. E-mail was fiction. *Money back garuntee does not guarantee money back.

waffle, idk if anyone should charge $25 as a first time coach, they dont have much credibility even though they are higher rated. $10 seems like a decent start imo, but people are greedy no doubt.

Trust me randomemory, the first million is the hardest. After that making the next 3 or 4 million is a piece of cake. And I didn't get to where I am today as CEO and chairman of Waffllemaster Enterprises by charging a measly $10 an hour for some chess lessons... believe me.

I really can't see myself trolling this kind of thread.

Neither can the people I hire to chew my filet mignon for me. Guess what I pay them? $10 an hour.

Wow, what an accomplished engineering student!

Charge them an arm and a leg.
... that's lunch and supper taken care of, anyway...
I have no voice atm and was 'laughing' so hard at this, but really i was just rocking backwards and fowards weezing like a retard.
On a related note both of us are proably going to hell.

Rating means a lot though. If you are a master then $10 an hour, even for a first time teacher, is a joke. Even if you aren't highly experienced, a NM can even charge upwards of $50/hour depending on where you live. There are some chess companies that teach chess after school to children that pay $50+/hour and you really don't need any experience other than being a decent chess player (class C or higher, for example). It varies widely, but far more than almost minimum wage...

Hello, I am World Chess Federation (FIDE) licenced trainer (Cat: Developmental Instructor) authorized to coach beginners and intermediate chess players. I have in my possession hundreds of positions to systematically bring a player to FIDE rated level in a step by step process. I charge 25 US dollars per hour online coaching. If anybody is interested you can contact me at waterbubbleatsea@gmail.com

Hell has all the best chess players anyway. I think they play quoits or something dumb like that in Heaven.

I see. I might have to get in on the action too then!

People don't value what they don't pay for.
In fact, money is a measure of value.
If you don't charge enough, you're doing the parents, kids and yourself a disservice.
They will value your instruction more and take their own chess more seriously if you charge like you are serious about doing this professionally.
If you don't charge enough, you run the risk of not being taken seriously.
It's like a free ebook. No one takes but a quick glance at it.
But if they paid $97 to learn a key piece of information to help them get to the next level, you'd have to use the jaws of life to pry them away from reading it.
You paid your dues already when you put all the time and effort to achieve a 1900 rating. That doesn't come easy.
Now it's time to see if those parents are willing to do something that doesn't come so easy too.
Also think of some "stick" strategies to keep the parents wanting to send their kids back.
A certain bonus they get after their first month and a special surprise bonus after six months.
Keep it fun for the kids and at the same time always be closing the parents and continue to "sell" without selling the parents and kids on the vlaue you are providing them.
If they purchase a whole year in advance, they get a month free or something could be a nice way to incentivize some immediate cashflow for yourself while at the same time saving parents money.

The price question in this case is for US members only, cose of different material status of different countries. In mine, for example, 2 x 1.5 hours per week in club costs children 20 $ monthly!!
Not just in chess, my wife is athletic trainer ,and they charge all so 20 $ per month . Training 3 x per week. So...

Over here we have a local hairdresser that advertises like this: not satisfied, hair back. You could try to develop a campaign like that too. You'll be popular soon

I had just under 2 years experience as a coach and charged $15 per student for a 45 minute class, got 8 students.

whatever anyone is prepared to pay...the more the better...maybe auction your services as a different way to promote your coaching

Put a limit to the number of student to raise the prices. (not to provide the kids with better support in smaller groups, but to create a false sense of urgency).
"No more than 5 students per session, 30 dollars per hour, first arrived first served".
Then, when it has worked, move on to "No more than 5 students per session, 30 dollars per hour starting price, best offer gets the place".
More seriously, it depends on the usual prices in your area. Don't forget group lessons are supposed to be cheaper per child than private coaching too.
Look them in the eye and in a stern voice say "$10,000 an hour per kid, and not a penny less."
They'll look shocked. Then say, "ok I'll cut you a deal. I never do this but, just $10,000 for the whole session."
They'll be so relieved they'll agree right away.
Oh, and make sure to have the documentation ready and get their signature as soon as they agree. Wouldn't hurt to bring a pen too.
