You need a GUI (graphical user interface), within which the "engine" will work. Try Arena Chess GUI 3.5.1. It's even compatible now with Chess 960 and it's free. Works great with the fish and comes with multiple engines, as well. Easier for you, if you're unfamiliar with the process, to uninstall fish, install the GUI, followed by re-installing Stockfish, linking it to that GUI after installation. Ok? Good luck! Just google the Arena version above, just as I typed it. BTW, there are many.
Stockfish is open source architecture. It requires a GUI that is UCI (Universal Chess Interface) compatible. The UCI simply provides instructions to your programs engine on how to utilize the GUI, using open communication protocol. So ensure the GUI you choose for your fish is UCI coded, in order to recognize & work with it. I assure you, ...the GUI will say so (that it's UCI), as everyone wants the strongest, free chess engine on the planet, Stockfish. Again, good luck!
