is a USCF rating of 873 good for a 9 year old?

idk

Hikaru Nakamura had a rating of 600 after his first tournament, so the 873 player is ahead of schedule! Seriously, the early rating of a child is pretty unimportant. What matter is whether or not you’re improving. As you continue to play and study, you should see rapid improvement and rating gain. But an 873 rating at this point is just fine

Yes, I think that is very good!

I think that it is okay for 9 year old, but I've met a number of prodigies who were way higher.  GM Kayden Troff won the Utah Speed Championship at age 10, beating a life master twice.  Still, with some effort, I'm sure that you can get better.  I recommend studying tactics, mostly simple ones.

I mean, It’s not prodigious but it’s fairly good. My rating was about the same at that age and I’m about 2100 USCF 5 or so years later.

It's ok I guess, When I was 9 I was maybe 1300.

when I was 9 I was around 800-900 uscf.

when I was 12 I was still 800-900 uscf.

then I gave up on chess.

Now, I'm not.

Yes, but Nakamura was National Master (2200+ USCF) at 10. But that's Nakamura.

I was once barely able to hold a draw against a 9-year-old who was 1500+ in an over-the-board tournament about nine years ago. He was with the US team until a few years ago when he ended up 2100 before quitting because his rating was too low for the team.

But at 9 you have many, many years to study, play and improve. Good luck!

It is very good!

it is really good! But, remember, you still need to work hard wink.png

I was about 1000 USCF at 9 years old, and I "practiced chess" and "learned books", but i never actually put in much commitment. That's obviously why I'm only 1400 after many, many years! Over quarantine, I realized this, but unfortunately, it's too late now ._. I'm focusing on many things academically, and I don't have much more time for chess anymore.

So remember, keep on working hard! If you don't, you'll regret it(like me *sigh*) grin.png

I never bothered to *actually* learn chess, so I never broke the 1000 USCF barrier

But then I bothered to study
