Martin_Stahl

It's not the worst move, just not one of the shorter paths to mate.

ilpak127

yes, you are right

but why not choose the shorter path

thanks

I'm not super familiar with the Syzygy tablebases but in some quick reading earlier, I don't think the shortest path is what they look for, unlike Nalimov.

Did you get the files from the cygnitec site? Can you list the names of the "not zipped" files?

why in this position     8/8/k7/2B5/4B3/2N5/8/K7 w - - 1  syzygy makes the worst move Bb6

Syzygy tablebases work slightly different from some other tablebases you might have known from the past. Instead of showing the fastest route to mate at the top of the move-list, it chooses to show the fastest path to "zeroing". Zeroing means resetting the 50-move counter by capturing a piece/pawn or pushing a pawn. Because zeroing permanently changes the 'state' of the game, syzygy sees it as 'progress' towards achieving the final result, whether its a win or a draw.

Bb6 forces Kxb6, which according to the tablebase was the fastest way to 'zero' the position and 'progress' towards a mate. Syzygy has no problem mating with a bishop and knight, and simply sees this free bishop as a 'simplification' to an easier mate for the bot.

Hope this was useful

yes, it was useful

yes, it cygnitec site

in WDL/5

../

5.7z.001

5.7z.002

and i can't open it.

in DTZ/5

5.7z.001, 5.7z002, 5.7z003, 5.7z004, 5.7z005

@ilpak127, the files ending with numbers indicate that the 7z zipped file has been split into multiple parts. You need to download all of the parts and put them all in the same folder. Then, using the 7z utility, right-click on the first part (the file ending in 001) and select "Extract files".

Also, I don't know if you absolutely need both the DTZ and WDL files, but I always download them all.
