I travel a bit. In many towns there are places where a visitor can play chess with strangers. If the weather is nice these games of "unprotected casual chess" are played outdoors in parks or plazas and are public. If you know of such a place, anywhere in the world please email me or post here. Thank you.

Examples are:

Philadelphia - Rittenhouse Square

Chicago - Oak Street Beach

Denver - Downtown 17th Street Mall

Cambridge, MA - Cafe just south on Harvard Square

New York - Washington Square

Hyde Park Sydney . Big set that you can walk around on the board as well

Fremantle - same as above.

What is the set in Hyde park like? Do many people play there on weekends?

St. Louis Chess Club has some tables outside. You can go inside once for free and they have day passes too. I have only been once (live too far away ) but it is a pretty nice place.

My eyesight is kinda bad. Was that a girl or a hippie playing chess? It's too bad that most chess players are guys. Frown

Pretty sure it was a girl, but I imagine it was a staged picture. That said, they do offer women only classes at the club, taught by GM Finegold, so I'm sure they are women that play there, at least occasionally.

As badly as I have been playing lately, the main thing that is unprotected in my chess is my king.  And I'd be glad to set up a board outside if you want to stop by for a game, but it is still a bit chilly.

I remember there being public outdoor chess sets (with huge pieces) installed in the north end of Parc des Bastions in Geneva, Switzerland, back when I used to live there. But that was over twenty years ago...

When I was down in Santa Monica, I remember a place down by the beach where a lot of people were playing chess, I wasn't there for long enough to tell if this is a regular thing, but it looked cool.
