Because at your age kids are having fun with the girls, not with Chess pieces

First of all chess doesn't cause kids to have the best marks/grades at school. I strongly believe it is a myth that is there because of correlation but not causation. If you are a kid you might not know what correlation and causation are but you can find very nice articles online about it.
Now to your question. Ok. I play chess myself and so I do like chess. I am 32 years old. Many of my friends also don't have interest in chess kind of like your classmates don't. Why is that? Most people have good reasons not to play chess.
For one chess has a learning curve and people don't feel like spending hours to learn openings strategies and all that.
People have many other fun things to do which do not require big time investment or commitment like chess.
Also many people want to move around and don't want to sit in a chair for too long.
Chess is not rewarding long term. In sports there is double reward. People can become physically fit and those who are very skilled could hope to become famous and get rich from that. At least many believe that.
Chess itself is not popular and doesn't appear cool to people.
There are many other intellect requiring activities that kids can choose such a strategy and puzzle video games.
I am sure others can think of more reasons.

They say it's boring but I disagree, I think it's great for kids to learn to play chess and it's often the kids who play who get the best marks at school as well, so it has its benefits.

Well, chess is a very mind provoking game and (at times) frustrating. I can understand why some people don't like chess and others do. A lot of training is required to actually become a "novice" which is 1000 elo, and it's even harder to become "average" 1200 elo. I'm still 1100 elo and still am very fond of chess, but I can't see myself making it to (or past) average. But to cut to the chase,everyone has their own taste :D.
I lack patience, and concentration. I love chess!
I read in an article that chess does raise the IQ. So maybe it does make you smarter?

Why don't some people like chess? Same reason why some people don't like rock climbing, or broccoli, or video games, or rainy days, or certain kinds of music - because different people like different things. That's really the gist of it.
Alot of people say chess is for nerds. Okay, then I guess I'm the biggest nerd in the world. So what? Chess is awesome it keeps my brain moving.

The last generation or two grew up playing video games and watching movies instead of playing board games or reading books. As a consequence many young people today lack the patience, reading skills, and concentration skills of older generations, all of which are needed for good chess and good grades.
