Sorry to hear, I have a glass chess set and the frosted pieces are black. I also made a quick search to make sure.
Glass Chess Pieces

Luxury chess sets are pretty unique. If you remember anything about the brand I would Google it. My guess would be the frosted side being white, but I could be completely wrong.

Thanks for the replies. I've gone with frosted being black, but I've kept it instead of the white. It feels smoother, is more appealing to look at, and black was always his colour - Feels more approriate for me to have "his" and his to have "mine".

I'm sorry for your loss, Mr. McKimm. One of my cousins just passed away May 29. You never really get over a loss, you get on with it, memories and all.
I believe Mr. Guiraud is correct. I examined the Google images and those that are set up properly -- many aren't -- show the frosted as Black.
I like your gesture in Post #4; very touching.

You have my condolances, DG. What a nice and meaninful «ritual» you peformed, sounds like a wonderful thing to do.

Funeral was yesterday. I'm so happy to have a symbolic "link" between me and him.
It didn't occur to me until after I'd placed his King in his coffin, but he has the colour I'd always play with and it is lying down - as if to say he'd beaten me yet again. The piece I have will always be standing unless I have it on my person, which I have for the past few days. It'll find its place on a shelf sometime soon, I suppose.
Thanks for all your help, kind words, and sympathies. I might stick around here and start actually learning Chess. However, I'm already considering taking up Bowls in his footsteps, so we'll have to see.
Take care,
Jordan.
So I'll be honest, I'm not a big chess player. I joined this site about three years ago just to have a quick couple games with a friend because we were bored.
However, I own a glass chess set that I was given by a relative, and I kept it at my grandmother's house for whenever I visited - I would sometimes play my grandfather to kill time. He was pretty darn good at chess, and I always considered him to be the "best chess player alive", even though he wasn't as interested in the game as I always thought he was.
Anyway, he passed away on Thursday and it's left me feeling pretty crappy. His funeral is expected to be next Friday, and I really want to do something to remember him by. I'd like to take the Kings of each side of my chess set, and put one in with him in his coffin, and keep the other for myself.
But here's the thing: Like I said earlier, the chess set is glass. One side is frosted, and the other is polished.
I once had a game with him, and he beat me in just a couple of moves - I couldn't believe it had happened: Fool's mate. He was the black side, but it's been so long since I've actually played with that chess set that I can't remember which side was black, and which side was white. I no longer have the original box and "manual", so I can't really just look it up.
I was wondering if any chess regulars/experts would be able to help me out in figuring which side is which. It'll be very much appreciated.
