TheGrobe: "Maybe the kings aren't facing each other because both sides are white" so the photographer is a racist!? what a jerk...goldendog, yea youre right, they are for decoration, but non-chessplayers usually dont think of that. ive been asked many times if i ever use the glass set(s) they got for me!
Glass chess sets

I agree but not so strongly. Nothing is better than good old wood.
but u have to agreee that it would be fun to move the glass pieces

and then there's this piece of crupp.
Chess for Palm is way better. You can't even see the peices on this Excalibur unit.

glass chess sets would not work well when you were listening to music because the sound waves would vibrate the board and move the pieces around with out you picking them up or it ould reach a a note where the board breaks altogether

well, that´s a bit over the top, littlehotpot, when you put a classical music cd in your player, your windows of your house wouldn´t break either...

well i guess i am on the outs with this one. i have a $10 game combo box made of dark wood with a chess/checker board on top. the pieces are crappy so i went and bought a cheap glass set just for the pieces. on the dark wood it looks kind of nice. but the glass baord i notice the frosted squares fade easily.

the thing is it only works on some fequenciesso it might only work on d sharp but the music is on e flat so then it wouldn't have any effect

my wife bought me one she was soooo proud i didnot have the heart to tell her it was worthless, she bought me other things,it seems that people who dont play are attracted to things like this....oh well her heart was in the right place.

I figured out the trick to these sets. Get a colored piece of paper or cardboard and cut it to the shape of the 64 squares. Then tape it underneath the board. It makes seeing the squares a lot easier. I had a set like this at my job and after modding it, it worked great. I gave it away soon after though and replaced it with a wood set.
Boog.

Jeepers, I think they're cool! (just for looks though). They make too much noise when the pieces tip over...
But they're wonderful when you flip the board as an act of resignation.

If it´s not your own board, yes!

Nothing beats a wooden set. Nothing.
I have a glass set as well, and it's quite annoying to play on. There's the roadblock of figuring out which pieces are actually what that keeps one from playing the game to the best of their ability. I also don't like the figurines that aren't intuitive and easy-to-recognize.
BUT, glass is beautiful, and I'm sure there's a way to do it correctly. Glass can be colored, and in a low light situation, with enough coloring, glass could be quite nice indeed.
But yes. I'll stick with wood.

You would hate the set my daughter and I created then. We went to the toy store and bought a bunch of appropriately sized pieces to create our own chess armies.
Her side (which she named Team Butterfly) has Mickey and Minnie Mouse as the King and Queen, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty as the Bishops, Strawberry Shortcakes as the Rooks, Kittens as Knights, and a row of Puppies as Pawns (she's named each of the puppies and they have their own designated starting square).
Likewise, my Pawns are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Captain America is the King, Magneto is the Queen (most powerful piece), Wolverine and Iron Man are the Rooks, Cyclops and Punisher are the Knights, and my Bishops are Captain Jack Sparrow and Bootstrap Bill (from Pirates of the Caribeean).
Essentially, only the two of us can play on this set effectively. Anyone else would constantly be asking, "Now what piece is this?" But it doesn't take any thought at all for us to recognize each piece's function.

This glass set might be ok for a game once in a while, although your endgame might be a little inaccurate...

It depends what rules you play by -- if you have to drink your captures it could serve as an equalizer as the game progresses. If you have to drink your losses it Could be a quick downhill slide for the player that falls behind and make you think twice about your ability to sucessfully execute sacrificial combinations.
Which way do you think?
clear=light/frosted=dark or frosted=white/clear=black?
This IS the problem. If there's something dark under the board, then the clear squares will appear to be dark squares (darker than the frosted squares), but if the surface under the glass board is light then the clear glass squares will appear lighter than the frosted squares. Too confusing.
Just turn the board 90° depending on the colour of the underlying surface.
The picture in the 1st post has an entirely black background, and yet the clear pieces are set up to represent white. It looks like the bottom right corner is black. But then again, the Kings and Queens are not directly opposite each other either, so whoever took that picture obviously doesn't even play chess.
Maybe the kings aren't facing each other because both sides are white.
