Good Music for Playing Chess

I was a Metallica fan from '83(I was 8) until only a few years ago. But the way their music got me so pumped out and hyper, there is no way I can listen to them while "chessing", I'd wind up knocking over the board and sending the pieces flying in all directions like a firework explosion. lol

Try 'The Outlaw Torn', this is the only Metallica song I can listen to while playing chess.

APStevens

lots of:

Coltrane

Davis

Ellington

and this group i recently found called the Bad Plus.

Ozzie, I never really got into that song that much. That was off of the not very recent "Garage Days" set right? To me, Metallica died after ...And Justice for All..then Bob Rock : gag : ..just didn't have the same appeal to me after that.

Elaphant211

I bump Tupac, Bethoveen, Mozart, & Bone Thugs n Harmony.!

Nothing can beat this line up. Ha. !

:)

ChessMarkstheSpot

That is certainly a unique lineup..having classical with Rap..makes me wonder what Tupac would sound like if he partnered with Beethoven or Mozart. That could've been a Metallica "S&M" type album lol

"Carlsen: Oh, yes. If I am feeling gloomy before a game, I listen to gloomy music.

SPIEGEL: Such as?

Carlsen: You probably won’t know it, a song by Lil Jon. A silly rap song, but it does me good, I loosen up. "

the fact that world class player like Magnus Carlsen uses music to relax makes this thread very relevant to chess.

Perhaps when he becomes World Champion all of us will start listening to whatever he does. He might be a trendsetter for chess when it comes to that

Haha.

BTW the best Ladytron songs are Seventeen and Blue Jeans.  They're not so good nowadays.

ChessMarkstheSpot

Ladytron?!?!? Have I been away from music that much lately? Or am I just showing my age???

theoreticalboy

They're okay.  Disposable electro-pop.  But, they're not really so widely known, so it's not just your age, I'm sure.

If it's rap, forget about it. I'd rather listen to my washing machine. Same incessant rhythm, but without the idiotic lyrics.

ChessMarkstheSpot

I just feel like I've missed a decade with the music scene. I stick to the Doors, Zeppelin, Elvis..I have no idea what is "in" these days, and if I did know, I'd probably be scared.

Wa..... actually, I'll not even bother.

Surely the point is what's good, rather than what's "in"?  Particularly since the latter is an indeterminate concept to begin with...

I mean, a hefty chunk of the music I listen to is from 1977 - '82.  Doesn't mean I'm going to forget the modern era totally.

ChessMarkstheSpot

LOL Bur_Oak, that is a very good comparison. Washing machines certainly sound better and don't give me headaches like the blaring bass in the cars that play the rap music. I hear these people when I go out and it makes my lungs and stomach shake. It's terrible to hear.

EDIT: I think, for my own sanity, it's a good idea to forget the modern music era. I'm not as open minded to music as I used to be.

You didn't miss anything. Rock died in '74.

ChessMarkstheSpot

LOL I wasn't even born yet but I would not be surprised if that was pretty true. I don't even want to think about what younger people are listening to nowadays. Society is messed up enough. Undecided

theoreticalboy

See, Hammerschlag - I told you not to ask chess players!

Thank goodness!
