At your level if you seriously want to improve your game I would recommend:

studying tactics till you reach 2500

watching a win at chess series with either Levy or a other chess creator of your choosing.

playing only 15-10 rapid and 5-5 blitz and nothing faster. And Analyse every game.

I’ve got levy’s courses and a few on Chessable, I love learning new opening and ideas but they are expensive and 90% of the lines learned don’t make it into my games as it requires reciprocated understanding I.E my opponent also has learned mainline theory.

If your like levy’s style and want to support his work then get the E4 NYStyle and Caro Kann and they are great for beginners- intermediate but I would recomend you shop arround aswell find what openings you find inspiring and suit your playing style. I personally love attacking chess so later moved from the solid caro Kann to the dynamic Sicilian D.

but right now the best value for your money at this stage would be just getting a Gold or Diamond Account here and grind it out in the puzzles

and watch a free win at chess series on YouTube to develop your thinking process and chess psychology! That along side tactics can not be understated enough!

you’ll begin to piece together solid understanding of opening middle and endgame principles with tactical board awareness, this alone will hike you up into the 4 digits in no time!

As for Learning an opening I would look at the Vienna as a starting point through levy but just the free YouTube video to begin with.

Through levy’s free content and puzzles study to 2500+ I went from 700-1200

after gaining a few courses and more puzzle study  that pushed me up to 1500+

but it’s worth noting there are soo many content creators to chose from so I would shop arround find your favourite diet of chess instruction and entertainment and just enjoy the journey of learning happy.png

best of Luck to you chief!

Oh also just like to add,

I’m only really a online player who plays causually OTB with friends who are similar in strength, and with that I can honestly say I am no professional authority of what strategy of improving your game at your level is best.

There are plenty ways to go about it but how it made good ground very quickly but I still have a long way to go especially in improving my middle game and endgame. but as you asked for thoughts experiences I thought I’d share happy.png

Hi all

Just wanted your thoughts on Levy's new online course, Chessly. Is it really worth the money? I am seriously wanting to improve my game.

Or is it worth spending my money on Chess.com and doing watching there videos.

Please share your views/experience.

regards

Amjad

If you are serious about improving, chessdotcom is a vastly better choice than Gotham.

No not really.

I purchased course on another website and their structure are kind of equivalent to gotham (with drill ).

You don't have the equivalent on chessdotcom. You have video with short exercise but nothing close to what you can find on other platform.

Like for example the best course I have bought so far is from an IM on the subject of piece exchange. Lot of explanation, lot of exercise and you can drill.

On another site I bought courses on opening and pawn structures. No exercise there but with more or 30 hours of video per course.

You are comparing platforms. I was addressing the content creator. Gotham gives a lot of bad advice. That’s my point. Drills based on flawed ideas do not improve your game.

When an IM or FM makes chess content ,they analyse and study the position beforehand with a computer ,so dont worry they are giving the best advice , if your fide rating is 1800 to 2000 or chess.com rating is 2400 or below ,u can consult or buy fide master or international master for chess lesson ,and professional chess player mainly use them as consultation with GM costs more and as mentioned above if ur rating is below that and u go for GM coach then most probably u are going for overkill ...and speaking of chess.com course ! Yes the courses are good and can help u get rating above 2000 but the problem is that many topics are superficially touched like opening theory..and u have to use explorer tool to learn opening deeply ...which is like saying "google has all the information and knowledge , then why do you need a teacher or book , the problem is google is ocean " , but particular courses in chessly , chessable focus on a topic and covers it quite deeply , for example ,,if u buy a endgame course then u will find all the endgame theoretical knowledge , drills and practice in a single course and dont have to check this and that course as u have to do in chess.com।........HOPE THIS HELPS!

I have bought more than half courses available on chessly, so I believe this qualifies me for giving my opinion. The free chapter is the most fun and advantageous chapter for the buyer, most of other chapters are boring, rote-memorization heavy ,often unintuitive and the lines feel like computer lines, not following basic chess principles e.g Pirc chapter in e4 course.

I regret spending almost 1000 dollars on chessly (but to be frank I have spent way more on fansly xd)

Now I am using chess books to improve. Thinking of buying Andras Toth chess courses on chessable.

And I agree with the guy above who was saying many of Levi's lines retard your growth, especially the caro kann course gave me most sterile games where tactics came only after move 20-35.

Before like 1800 they are very good. A lot of the lines are too short and leave you in unknown positions that you yourself have to dig deep into.
