I have been searching for a definition / meaning of the term "Grandmaster Elect".  It seems to pop-up in a lot of places.  Can anyone help?

I believe GM elect is one who has all the necessary requirements for the title but FIDE hasnt officially awarded it to them yet.

Reb, thanks for that.  It sounds very sensible.  I looked at the FIDE website and cannot find any reference to this, but it does sound good.

Indeed, I am in such a position myself, merely awaiting the approving stamp of the FIDE pen pushers. I currently luxuriate in the title of "Patzer Elect".

Thanks for the responses - it still sounds a little "iffy" though.  I would expect FIDE to have mention of it in their website / pdf somewhere.  Anyway, I happen to have a 3rd party contact to a grandmaster in this position, and I will ask - and then respond here in the forum.

I'm about 99% that it means that the player has gotten all of their GM norms, but their rating of 2500 or more has not been made official. As FIDE only publishes official ratings a few times per year.
