I'm looking to buy a Mephisto with levels for begginers and intermediates.  I was wondering what rating range intermediate levels are and if anyone out there already has one.

Why not buy a Palm or something instead? Much more functional.

Niekro

What's a palm?

edit : It's a cell phone?  I can't afford one.

Palm devices are PDAs, handheld things that are pretty much past their heyday due to what phones can do.

PDAs would be good for chess and you can get free and good playing software for Palm PDAs. Check ebay for prices. Pretty cheap.

Thanks guys.

Does it matter if I have a Mac?

goldendog

It should not but take the opportunity to do some research.

I found a medical palm pilot at a decent price on ebay.  Can I just erase all the medical programs?

goldendog

I'm sure you can clear the whole device. Take notice of the model number and do some google searches re that and chess perhaps.

Amazon has a new one for $75,  reg. $200 and it's Mac compatible.  It has 8MB of ram but has a a memory slot.  Should I get it?

this mephisto is a travel model , cost 27$. you probably cannot find any new smart phone or PDA for that price. If you already have a smartphone(symbian, android, wmobile, iphone, etc) then you can easily find a good chess program. If not, you could find used ones, especially older PDAs that would match the price. Find some packed with Windows mobile 2003 or newer and thats it. On the other hand,if you do not need other PDA functionalities, maybe a mephisto is what you actually need.and perhaps you can save few bucks if you look it on ebay, mephisto is 2003 model, so you might find few cheap used ones there.

How big is the average chess program for pdas?

edit : I'm torn

I have a chess.com app for my android - 1.23MB and Aart Bik chess - 236kB. for PDAs I would expect size of couple hundred kBs. but google can give you best answers.

The Mephisto is good for tactics training but not much in strategy. I've read that it goes  to the mid 1700's. I'm not that good so I can't swear on it. Opening book is rather limited. At the price I don't regret buying mine at all.

The Nintendo DS is pretty good for $99 for a used one. You can get both Chessmaster and Fritz for it. Again I don't regret buying this at all.

I have the Excalibur/New York Times touch screen chess computer. It goes up to about 2000-2100, and I haven't beaten it yet in 2 years

I don't know enough about Palms so I think I'll go with the Mephisto.  Thanks for the responses!
