In the 1800s a strong player (figure IM equivalent) got mated on move three of a center counter.

1 e4 d5, 2 ed Qxd5, 3. Bc3 (oops, illegal move grabbing the bishop instead of the knight - under the rules of the day he had to substitute a king move and thus played Ke2) Qe4#

It won’t be tried at the highest levels because it’s a position that can be punished at black can basically force a -1 or so.

Fun fact Magnus Carlsen once fell for it in the final of a big tournament. He was completely blindsided by it and never saw it coming. He went on record afterwards as saying “I have been playing chess for many years. And won many times. I fear few opponents or openings. But that thing... that absolute nightmare... it scares me. There’s so much theory to unpack I may spend many years trying to figure out a counter. But realistically once they play that opening we all know the game is over.” By this point Magnus was balling crying and could not be contained he was in absolute hysterics. Carlsen has been rarely seen in public and even if he is he rushes off. He has developed PTSD and is constantly in a state of trauma. So ladies and Gentlemen this is why I primarily use the scholars as my opening. Thank you all for coming to my TED talk good luck and goodnight

Do you know who the players were in this game? I can’t find anything about it.

Here's a recorded game by a player (White) who was three times Champion of France:

The queen move in the Scholar's Mate does not happen at master level.

The bishop move 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 , the Bishop's opening, is played frequently. A former club player of mine plays this a lot and he often makes it transpose into the Vienna opening.
