No, I dont think so. He's just the new popular chess player. I dont see a swell of people lining up to learn the game nor schools making it manditory for all students to take as a course of study.
Has chess gotten any more popular since Carlsen took over?
Well, has it? I think not. We were all duped.
In Norway at least. I estimate that the chess community in Norway has increased by 200 % since he became WC.
I started playing chess about two months after Carlsen took over but not because he took over. I didn't yet know who he, or any other popular chess person, was. Just out of curiousity I decided to start playing, and its been very fun since.
Chess will never be as popular as it was in 1972 and that's a good thing in my opinion. If Nakamura was world champion there would be an upsurge in chess publicity since the media in the states are really good at pitching success stories

Not just Carlsen, with the advancement in technology making chess avaliable anywhere at anytime, I'm often studying chess games in class on my phone and also making Online Chess moves, don't tell my teachers ;) but I agree that Carlsen's cocky attitude and the fact he also models and has a life outside chess would appeal to a lot more younger players like myself, he's my favourite chess player.

Chess is an acquired taste. Don't expect the masses to get enthralled.
Basically the game is pretty dense, and most people don't care. Sorry.

Im not so sure you are right with 700 million active players it is a majore game. To comparison "only" 265 million play fotball. I know the numbers may be rought since chess players are estimated world wide and fotball is people organised by fifa, but still chess is very much for the masses.

where you get those numbers from?
In one's own country definitely but from observation, I would say world wide there hasn't been any noticeable change to the popularity.

the fotball numbers are from Fifa around year 2000 chess numbers are from chess.com :)

Playing soccer is actually fun and healthy.
Chess is so-so fun at best and detrimental to physical health, and possibly detrimental to mental health.

I was speaking with my cousin who is Norvegian. She has never played chess in her life, but she asked me, since I play chess, if I knew someone called Magnus Carlsen.
I think he makes chess popular in a cyclist champion : people like to read about him, but rarely like to make a 5 hours trip with 4 climb in the Alps.

I am in shock with the number of chess players. I kinda think it is very over-inflated. Is chess really this popular? do I live in a corner of the world where pretty much nobody but me play it while everywhere else on the world is the most popular game?
