Hoyle Majestic Chess was a CD-ROM game back in the day that I liked. It contained a tutorial for playing the game and traditional strategies, an online mode (which is obsolete now because this site exists), and most central to its appeal, an Adventure mode. The Adventure mode involved collecting an army of pieces each chapter by completing puzzles and quests, and also allowed the use of RPG-esque items.
Did you play this game and what did you think of it?
It was OK, I played through the adventure mode once and tried out a few of the playing personalities. It's probably best for beginners. John Merlino was the associate producer; He's a good guy and has posted on the Talkchess forums.
There aren't a lot of playing personalities, but they're OK. (Chessmaster has more personalities.) The playing engine is based on David Kittinger's "WChess 2000" engine, which is a well-designed engine.
