Have you played "Majestic Chess?"

Hoyle Majestic Chess was a CD-ROM game back in the day that I liked. It contained a tutorial for playing the game and traditional strategies, an online mode (which is obsolete now because this site exists), and most central to its appeal, an Adventure mode. The Adventure mode involved collecting an army of pieces each chapter by completing puzzles and quests, and also allowed the use of RPG-esque items.

Did you play this game and what did you think of it?

It was OK, I played through the adventure mode once and tried out a few of the playing personalities. It's probably best for beginners. John Merlino was the associate producer; He's a good guy and has posted on the Talkchess forums.

There aren't a lot of playing personalities, but they're OK. (Chessmaster has more personalities.) The playing engine is based on David Kittinger's "WChess 2000" engine, which is a well-designed engine.

Yes I've already played and I wouldn't recommend this game where notably the AI is no fun to play.

a : As a lesson in chess and learning I recommend Chessmaster. The AI is humanized by The King engine (explained in about the Engine into help) and the AI is interesting until 2000 and after which it becomes a bit nonsensical and the big flaw is that we're deluding ourselves into progressing by developing anti-computer techniques.

b : As chess game program I recommend Shredder which is available on cell phone or ipad. Shredder has an elo rating with the adapt strenght function, time setting like 15m+10s per move (like tournaments in rapid with Carlsen etc.) and the AI choosing openings without having to know a whole encyclopedia of openings from the first levels etc.
