Hikaru vs Rey Enigma

If you go to Rey Enigma's website and look under 'Aviso Legal' (legal notice), you will see that the site is registered to a company. When you then look up that company in company records, then you'll see a name. If you look up that name, you'll see that there is a Spanish IM, rated 2379, by that name. The guy happens to be a popular chess commentator and popularizer in Spain. Of course, it could just mean that he is Rey's manager... but the rating is precisely what Hikaru predicted.

Excellent internet sleuthing. *Applause*

I refuse to believe Hikaru knows anything about chess. I also refuse to believe he's smart enough to have done this investigative work himself. I assume someone messaged him this information, and he pretended to guess a 2375 rating.

I'm being a bit facetious of course, but to pin someone down to a 50 point range... it's just silly. I know most of his fans have no idea how to play chess, so they're entertained by it, but...

... maybe he just got lucky.

Some people think there are several different players under the mask, depending on the moment, but I don't agree. Some even have guessed it could be Pepe Cuenca sometimes.

Seriously?!

Of course Hikaru is acting, for example he pretended not to know the outcome of the game. But whether you like him or not, he knows a lot about chess. He has been doing nothing else since he was a little child. Just as a top tennis player wouldn't take long to estimate an opponents strength, a top chess player can estimate an opponents strength too. Of course he could have used additional information to narrow it down. For example, his lichess rating of 2700 is typical for players in that FIDE range. The purpose of my post was not to praise Hikaru (though his understanding of chess is as good as it gets, but that's a different story), but to share some additional information on Rey Enigma.

Oh, yeah, he probably just looked at the lichess rating, you're right.

Anyway, for a long time (10 or so years) I've observed that people can only estimate plus or minus 400 points from their rating. After that everything tends to look the same. So for example, that would mean I couldn't tell the difference between an IM and a super GM even though there's a huge difference. Similarly I couldn't tell the difference between a 1000 player and a 1400 player.

But you can overcome that if, for example, you're a coach and you look at a lot of lower rated player's games. I've seen a few videos where Levy has been really good at guessing ratings, and I think that's why.

So that's why I doubt Hikaru. He was a GM as a teenager. He probably hasn't been rated as low as 2300 since he was 10 years old or something. He has no clue what a 2300 plays like (unless he's practiced by looking at a lot of games and guessing ratings, which is possible since he and Levy make videos like that).

It's true that someone with coaching or teaching experience could be better at that. On the other hand, Hikaru does all of these speedruns in his streams, where he begins with a low rated smurf account and ends up facing a lot of lower rated players along the way. He also faces FMs and IMs in online tournaments all the time. I do think that he could tell an active GM from an IM or lower with fairly good accuracy (not all the time, but most of the time).

Yeah, when he said "this guy is NOT a GM because of the tactics he missed (and he gave some examples)"  I believed him.

When he said "it takes a player at least 2300 to play this move" when it was a simple retreating move to defend, I had to roll my eyes. He was totally clueless on that one.

I hadn't thought of the speedrunning stuff. I guess that would help a player be more accurate.
