Cosmicharmonic has a point. Aronian is still a worthy contender.

Contender of? Being a punching bag for magnus Carlsen? Aronian is not going to have a growth rate anywhere near Carlsen's because he is 32 years old. Caruana is rated roughly the same as him but is 10 years younger. Aronian was never Carlsen's kryptonite to begin with looking at their head to head score. Aronian is good at tournaments, but he's weak when it counts. Look at the candidates tournaments to see his poor performance as the tournament "favourite". He will never challenge Carlsen for the title let alone beat him.

32 is still a young age for a chess player. Fischer became the WCC at 32. Aronian has a +4/-9 record against Carlsen, while Caruana is +3/-5 against Carlsen. Caruana is slightly better in this aspect, but Aronian is not to be dismissed.

You are wrong to say that Fischer became world champion at age 32 , he was in fact 29 years old in July 1972 when he won the title match with Spassky .

If Vishy Anand comes up short against Magnus I do not expect that Aronian will find the courage to win the candidates tournament in 2 years from now .. that tournament may well be won by a chinese player if this years' olympiad is anything to go by.

Crazychessplaya

You're right, Fischer lost the WCC title at 32.

Aronian = patzer

gbidari

I've heard it said that the only real challenge to Carlsen is by the man in the upper right.

I disagree. 32 years is no problem. I am 52 with the Norwegian rating 878 from this spring. On saturday I had a fiderapidprestation of 1624 (ca 1400 Norwegian). So if a 52 year old man can improve 500 points in a half year, a 32 year old superGM also can improve.

GM Simen Agdestein, 47 years old, improved a lot before Norway Chess, working with GM Romanov.

Aronians problem with catching up with Carlsen is that Carlsen too might improve.

The difference between 878 and 1400 is much smaller than the difference between 2800 and 2850.

Do you really consider that a man in quote #1 OP ?....Maybe in 5-10 years or so....maybe never....Peter Pan Syndrome is an epidemic.

I myself am rapidly approaching late youth... at 58.

varelse1

Currently, Magnus has no real rival on the foreseeable horizon.

I'm afraid not... I've spent a dissolute youth (all 50-odd years of it).

Normally a 900 will score maybe 25% against 1400, and a 2800 score 40% against 2850 I guess. So talking about the winningchances the gap is larger from 900 to 1400, but I guess you are right when you talk about chess skills. Many  monstersupertalents can reach 2800 (talents like the best Chinese, Richard Rapport, Isak Sjøberg, Aryan Tari, Johan Salomon) but only one,two or three can reach the absolute top in their time ( Fisher, Kasparov, Carlsen, Capablanca, Alechin, Tal)

The_Ghostess_Lola

Well, that's okay....are you good in the bird's nest ?
