Like when Rybka was shown to be a clone of Fruit?
And then that... fire-something engine. It wasn't around long, but it was a houdini clone IIRC?
But now we're learning houdini is a strockfish clone I guess.

Houdini 6 - Stockfish clone is much worse than Rybka scandal. ( It is almost exact copy of Stockfish 8).
As modern AB engines are too much similar in idea, sometimes there is difficulty in telling " copying idea vs copying codes".
One programmer ( Matthew Wai) is sick of those allegations and created a unique chess engine. " Learn from scratch by its own".
His first success was " Giraffe" in 2015.

And his success become completely phenomenal once he joined the Google, deep mind team and created , Alpha Zero. in 2017.

Yeah, the cups & balls trick with clear cups. Those guys are amazing!

@OP - I don't follow Houdini very closely - If I have Stockfish, is there any reason to have Houdini?
Houdini is clone of Robbolito and Ippolit so for me Rybka and Houdini are not legit engines. Stockfish is the number 1 now. We don't to use any comercial engine.
