How come my puzzle rating is so high, when my other ratings are so low?

if you look, my puzzle rating is ~1900, but my other ratings are about 1000-1100.

I've always wondered why. Any ideas?

Dremooo

you probably do puzzles more than actual games

Platypus

yeah

Puzzles ratings are inflated. Mine is 2500-2600, but only 1900 in blitz. :/

He played ~50 games in the last ~40 days and his rating is stable at 1000, so I don't think it's that.

Not everyone... but it's pretty common to have a tactics rating about 400 points above your blitz. So someone like @snudoo I'd say is unusually good at tactics compared to other ratings.

But @checkmateohwait gap is even more.

I guess not only does the OP do a lot of tactics, but he don't know much about anything else, and doesn't review his games to try and improve on things. Just a guess.

In Puzzles, you know there is a tactic there so, depending on how you approach it, you can solve a lot more positions with that knowledge.

In a game, you don't have that benefit. You might think there is a tactic available, but you have to identify it, calculate the line and execute it correctly if it is there. Add to that the time pressure and you're likely missing a lot of tactical ideas, both for you and your opponents, which will have a negative outcome on your games.

llama44

Yeah, in games most moves aren't tactics. Checking for a tactic needs to be done every move because you might win, but most moves you wont find one. When that happens you (usually) need to play a move that builds up your position. The opening is a good example, you build by developing your pieces.

I assume once the OP does two things his other ratings will improve a lot:

1) Learn how to build up his position (so to speak). Mostly involves safe ways to increase piece activity. For example a knight in the center might be very active... but is it protected? Can it be chased away? That's what I mean by safe activity.

2) Practice using both ways of thinking in a game. First use your tactics brain, then use your building brain

Generally I am usually thinking of attacking whether or not my position allows it. If I see a move that “looks good” I’ll probably play it immediately, and check for tactics after. Doesn’t work out so well sometimes, I get too focused and then drop a queen and hang a rook... (actually happened in my last game)

Although in the other hand it really allows for some complete walkovers

Yeah if tactics were to determin playing strength then @ALYURFED would be the chess world champion instead of Carlsen.

We just need a dude with picture perfect memory to memorize all the puzzzles to get to god-tier ratings

TheChessPro247

My rating is 2013 puzzles and blitz is 1000 and something.

That's already happened right?

I'm pretty sure I saw a guy with a 10,000 tactics rating at some point.

And the puzzle rush champs do that too, memorization I mean.

ConcertoinEMinor

puzzles present you to a situation that you can solve, but in games you have to get to that or a better position first.

yea but that takes a lot of time and effort, there are so many randomized outcomes when you start a puzzle.

llama44

Randomized outcomes?

Oh, you mean like, puzzle B doesn't always follow puzzle A? The sequence is different?

They user i mentioned actually has a 18000+ tactics rating. In all honesty though, i think it looks pretty ridiculous.

PleasantEscalator

the reason: probably bc you blunder the biggest ones, like hanging queens

Muisuitglijder

Not to mention the number 2 who was number 1 for quite some time and showed it all off on his profile as being the number 1 in the world with his chess.com tactics rating whoohoo! And now he's showing off to be the consecutive number 1. Who cares about your chess.com tactics rating? I certainly don't.

But then again, he calls himself @FlashyFerrari
