That's a question... For English only!

I know little about that, but I can tell you this: in ancient times, an older version of chess was called in India: "Chaturanga".

In Persian, checkmate said "shamat" (unsure of spelling) means "The King is dead". Possibly, sha (as in king), would have become chess in English, Shach (the game of king(s)) in German, Shachmaty in Russian, etc. Funny thing, in French it's "échecs", which also means "fail" and is used in numerous jokes using the double meaning of it.

It is likely, in my opinion, that chess, in it's original name, means "game of (the?) king(s?)", more or less tongue.png

Chess got its name from a mispronunciation by British merchants, it was originally called shah (king in Persian), Shah mat =king is finished..

arashMidos777

king in persian شاه
mate means مات  which also means elimination

Chess was named after garry chess who invented the game

The name 'Chess' comes from a French word.

The original 6th century Sanskrit word for Chess was 'Chaturanga' meaning 'Four arms" (of the military). The Persians then adopted the name 'Shah', meaning 'King' (a corruption of the term 'Shah Maat' - 'the King' is frozen' - is where we get 'Checkmate' from). After the Moors brought it to Europe via Spain, it was given many different names in different countries. The French name was 'Eschés' - it is from this word that we derive the name 'Chess'. The singular form of the word was 'Eschec' which literally translates as 'Check' or 'failure'.

Sorry but the "real" name of Chess is whatever each country happens to call it. Before the Persians called it Shatranj (an alternative name was 'Shah'), it was known as Chaturanga in India where it was invented

Farsi was one of the languages of the Persian Empire - that did not just include Iran. There were many languages within the empire before Islam.

Shatranj was not the original name as it was not invented in Persia or Iran. It was invented in India and its original INDIAN name was Chaturanga. Centuries later, the French called it Esches, which became simply Chess.
