How do great moves work?

Srsly, how do they work. They seem to be more common than brilliant moves Because I just got one great move in my game.

Great moves are only moves which maintain the evaluation in the position and I believe any other move would be considered a mistake or blunder.

Would great move be brilliant if update never happened?

I don't recall what the previous definition was exactly.

great moves are better than the best move

That's not the definition; there's no such thing as better than best meh.png

Though, now that I look at it again, it may not necessarily be the only move that maintains the evaluation.

For example, Bxa6 is considered great, even though Bxf6 is also good.

it is because the best move is just the computers best move not the players best move the brilliant move is the best move

The best move, by definition is the best move. There is no way an algorithm can say another  move is better from the player's standpoint just by looking at analysis or rating even.

Here is another great move and it's great because it's the only move that maintains the level of evaluation of +5.5 as opposed to other options of +1.7 or less.

This is how you should look at it. Best move is the best. Great move and brilliant moves are still the best, but are the best (or equivalent) moves that have some other criteria that makes them either great or brilliant.

Brilliant move is the best move (or close to best move) that additionally sacrifices material.

Great move is the best move that is pretty much the only move that either brings the advantage, or at least is the only move that keeps the position equal or close to it. So great move is the best move and additionally the only move that doesn't change the evaluation.

There might be some exceptions, but that is how it should work.

So a great move is a correct move.

Pretty much the best move, where other moves are worse. That is how I understood it.

At depth 26 of that position, 10. Qxd7+ is an inaccuracy and 12 ... Bb4+ is just excellent
