How do I go over 1200 rating?

Sort:
Amonchess

Just now I reached 1204 on rapid. This is the fifth time already I'm 1200 rapid. I always tend to go down below 1200. My highest was 1236.

About 21 days ago I broke through the 1100 and kept going up. Now I want to go to 1300, but I keep going back and up. I must admit the first few times I went back down I just made stupid mistakes like hanging pieces. I also play after midnight, so that factors into letting pieces open too.

Is it just experience? Should I be content for now for going up from 1050 to 1204 in 21 days? Is patience the answer?

I used to only play blitz, but I didn't learn as much as I do now. My blitz is much lower than my rapid because I havn't played blitz in a while.

The basics of each phase of the game

Opening:

Follow the Opening principles:

  1. Control the center squares – d4-e4-d5-e5

  2. Develop your minor pieces toward the center – piece activity is the key

  • Complete your development before moving a piece twice or starting an attack.

  • Move pieces not pawns.

  1. Castle

  2. Connect your rooks

  • By move 12, you should have connected your Rooks, or be about to do so.

Middle game:

When you have completed the Opening Principles, you are now at the middle game. Now you need to formulate a middle game plan. The middle game is a very complicated part of a chess game. A simple way to develop a middle game plan is to perform the following steps.

  1. Scan your opponents 5th, and 6th ranks (3rd, and 4th if your black)

  2. Look for weak pawns, and or weak squares.

  • Weak pawns and squares are Pawns, and squares that cannot be defended by another Pawn.

  • Knights are excellent pieces on weak squares.

  • When deciding on weak squares, and weak Pawns to attack, the closer to the center the better

End game:

Start with the basics:

  1. Learn basic mates – KQ vs. K, KR vs. K, KRR vs. K

  2. Learn Opposition, and Key Squares

  3. Learn basic King and Pawn endings

Pre Move Checklist:

1. Make sure all your pieces are safe.

2. Look for forcing move: Checks, captures, threats. You want to look at ALL forcing moves (even the bad ones) this will force you look at, and see the entire board.

3. If there are no forcing moves, you then want to remove any of your opponent’s pieces from your side of the board.

  1. If your opponent doesn’t have any of his pieces on your side of the board, then you want to improve the position of your least active piece.

Eventually you find a plateau and stay there for a while. It could even be many months. Then your rating will increase pretty fast, then another plateau, etc.

Study:
Read a book. Strategy, tactics, endgames, or an annotated game collection. Read reviews to make sure the book is suitable for your level.

Drills:
Solve tactic puzzles for 30-60 minutes a day. Review any missed or difficult puzzles a few days later.

Play and analyze:
Review the opening from the game against a database like chess.com's opening explorer. Use an engine to find the big tactical mistakes.

---

You don't need to do all 3 every day, but try to do something each day. Chess is a skill like any other. To be good requires consistent learning, practice and review.

GodsPawn2016: Thank you so much! I have used the idea of 5/6 ranks and my game has improved a lot! Your other advice was also very helpful.

The_Chin_Of_Quinn: Thank you! Just as a samurai must sharpen his blade, so must the chess player with his mind. I will try to do as you say, your advice is very helpful, thank you!

Yureesystem: which book do you recommend? I tried looking for a Morphy book, but didn’t find one with annotations.

As of now I seemed to have stayed above 1200, thanks to your very much wanted advice, thanks to you 3 people. Now I'm at 1235. Lets see where this goes to. Hopefully to 1300 in the summer.

Update: and now im 1254. I wonder how long my winning streak wil last.

Well, first: stick to rapid. I played only rapid and climbed to 1300. Started playing blitz and my improvement completely stopped. In fact, I began developing bad habits and rushed moves, which held me back. Then, I recently started playing 15|10 rapid again, and I'm almost at 1400.

Second: don't play after midnight. I've lost sooooooo many games that way 😂. Concentration and calculation go to complete sh!t.

Third: be patient. Your rating will always fluctuate, though not as much as you improve.

Fourth: listen to gods pawn and the other highly rated guys. They are giving good advice.

Fifth: fact check advice you get on these forums. It's not always super accurate. Also, the advice I'm giving you is really basic, but if getting advanced advice from forum writers, check their rating.

If your looking for a game with a similar level player, and want to analyze the game during, challenge me to a game. Could help us both develop 😉
