Hello, and welcome to Chess.com.  There are a few different ways to play people on here.  The first is to go to the open seeks page here: http://www.chess.com/echess/open_invites.html.  You can also find players by rating/name (here: http://www.chess.com/members) and challenge them from their profile.  Now, both of these options are for what is here called "turn-based chess."  These are slow time controls where you have plenty of time to consider your options before making a move, from 1-14 days per move.  A lot of people don't care for this and prefer a quicker game.  If blitz is your style, you can try "live chess" here: http://www.chess.com/play/live.html.  However, this feature is still in beta testing, so there may be some bugs that still need to be worked out.  Of course, there are many other features here on chess.com, from videos to articles to puzzles, as well as this forum, so be sure to continue exploring and have fun.

I would like to see something in chess.com (article, links, videos, etc.) that can take me through the various ways I can play someone else online. Although I've been playing for years, I'm just now taking the steps to be something more than a beginning level player. I have only been playing against the computer on chess.com because I'm not clear how I would initiate a game with a complete stranger or find someone to play who is not so much better than me that I would get killed. I've heard chess.com is a good place for beginner to start these sorts of games, but I can find any instruction here as to how to do that (play games against people I don't know). BTW, your link in the message above (https://www.chess.com/echess/open_invites.html) does not take you to a functioning page.

You replied to a 13 year old topic. The site has changed a lot in that time.

Thank you. Those are helpful. I guess my question then is how to avoid being matched against someone who is much better than me. I don't want to waste anyone's time. Although I understand the basics of developing the pieces, some end game tactics, etc. I'm essentially at a beginner level and only want to be matched with people who are approximately the same.

That first link has a section on how to set custom seek options, such as rating. You can set some defaults as well in Settings and Daily and Live but I believe a session will default to your last game seek parameters so if you do that for your first game the other should be the same.
