How do I save particular variants (lines of play) included in an analysis to a PNG?

I want to create a PNG file from the variant lines that can ensue based on different options available at any given point in the play. I can click on the variants and see them on the chess board, but when I save the game, all I ever get in the saved PNG is the original line that I played, never the variant.

I tried copying the moves in the variant and pasting them into a PNG file, but apparently the Windows clipboard function does not work with the alternative (variant) lines, so that didn't work.

Did you open this game from your archive and click on the analysis button?

If yes, you should see a green save button. Did you click on that button after adding the variant line?

Thanks for your response, manekapa.  Yes,  I've tried three things. (1) I tried clicking on the green SAVE button *while* *exploring* *a* *variant* but always get nothing but the original game in the Saved Analysis area. Furthermore, (2) if I click on a move in one of the variants then download the game, I still only get the original game.  Finally, (3) the Windows clipboard function is not supported within the analysis, so I can't copy variant lines and paste them into a PNG file to "roll my own" as it were. To get the variant in a PNG file, I would have to *manually* *type* *every* *single* *move*.

There appears to be ONE and only one way to view variants and that is within analysis using the clunky method of hovering the mouse pointer over the variant. The web designers assumed that a glance at alternate lines is all anyone would ever want to do, so apparently they made no provision for either saving or downloading variants.

Here's a related question. There is no mechanism for saving a complete analysis, is there? PNG files do not support that, I don't think.

So, you click a line/move and it gets added to the move list and board. Then you click the download button.

If you want your added annotations/analysis you have to change the option to Annotation:

That will contain anything you added. The middle analysis option only includes what was generated from the Game Review. If you entered the game from Analysis, without the review, the export will include any added lines and annotations.

I'll try to find out if that's a bug or by design

Actually, a CORRECTION to what I said above.

The clipboard "works" in the since that you can select the material in a variant, copy it and paste it, into a PNG file but the line information is not all text and the part that is not text is not copied to the clipboard. Specifically, the little piece icons can't be copied. For example, a move involving a knight has a little image of a knight, a queen move a little image of a queen, etc. You cannot make a working PNG from what you are allowed to copy, because vital information (the names of the pieces!!) will be missing.

If you're trying to copy/paste the figurine notation, that's not going to work. You can get the PGN from the download option and would need to rely on the software you're using to read the PGN to do it's own display. If you switch to text notation, you should be able to copy/paste.

Martin_Stahl, thanks for your response., but I must disagree As I explained above, you can NOT get the PGN for the variants from the download option. You can get a PGN for the original game using download, but not for the variants.

And yes, I tried clicking the move in the variant, and yes, it shows the line in the window as the image you shared indicates. But when you click download YOU GET THE ORIGINAL GAME. That's the problem.

PLEASE prove me wrong. I will be delighted if you can.

If the designers intended to allow us to download variant lines using the method you suggest, then in that case, I HAVE FOUND A BUG in the software. But Martin, I don't think they intended to offer that functionality.

When I have Analysis (with added variations in it), it saves them to the PGN file as expected, when clicking on "Download".

Are you using this button? Not the "Save" button ... but the "Download" button (a downward-arrow icon), which is found at the bottom of the screen.

It should download the PGN file (variations included) to your computer.

See my screenshot. I tested and was able to see added variations in the PGN. You have to change to option to Annotations. That's if you ran a Game Review on it anyway.

Here's another set of screenshots after adding a variation:

Annotations option includes the variation:

Computer Analysis option doesn't include the variation, just the review analysis:

Staff have put in a ticket to look at the behavior for the Computer Analysis option when it comes to added variations. If they decide to change that behavior, it will likely be a low priority fix.

THAT WAS IT !! The Annotations button !!

Thank you very much, Martin. I appreciate your patient helpfulness.

Procedure in SUMMARY:
(1) In the analysis pane, click on variants that interest you
(2) Go to Game Review
(3) Click on Download button
(4) Select the Annotations radio button
(5) Press Download to download the annotated file

I would have never found this without your help, Martin. Thanks again!
