Still unclear...why would chess.com give free membership just for postings on forum?

Like people have said, to encourage forum activity. It's better to have more active members, isn't it?

aman_makhija

Once upon a time, when Chess.com was trying to drive forum activity and encourage people to participate in the community: I think the site has reached enough mass that the forums are plenty active nowadays, and I'm pretty sure that Chess.com no longer offers membership for points - the FAQ article provided almost 2 years ago by Martin has been removed.

[While Chess.com is okay with mention of our competitors, we are not okay with using our forums and blogs to essentially give them free advertising. I have therefore deleted those blogs that you mentioned - sorry for the inconvenience, David]

Dear David,

This is your website and your rules. I accept that.

My idea was not to advertise anyone or anything for free. While websites measure links, visitors, and resources in terms of hits and profit, bloggers write articles to share their thoughts or to recommend other people interesting features which complement the tools and functions already available.

If we follow your approach in principle, no mention should be made on the forum of chess books because this also means advertising authors other than chess.com authors etc.

What is not nice about this is that you forgot to drop a note to me personally. You did not have to go to the post office to do that, it's simple copy-paste.

You make a valid point: I should not have assumed that you were tracking this thread and would see my note above, so I apologise for not notifying you with a message. Furthermore, in hindsight I could have given you the opportunity to take down those blogs yourself, which would have given you the chance to save the content for publishing in an alternative location, so I apologise for not giving you that opportunity as well.

Chess.com does not view authors of chess books as competitors, so we have no problem with reviews of those. I hope you can appreciate the business logic that means we have little interest in supporting our competitors at our own expense: we would be more than happy for evaluations and reviews to be made in some neutral forum elsewhere, or in your own independent blog, which you can supply a link for in your profile.

I have heard that these points can be exchanged for Confederate money, is that true?

The disparity between blogs and forum is amazing.  Forums can get many thousands of hits blogs sometimes hardly break into the hundreds. There is also a huge disparity between bloggers who are perceived as being top bloggers and just average everyday ones.  This does not accurately reflect the content and quality because some of the top bloggers who are titled players present blogs that are almost empty except for a brief description and a link to their own personal site.  They simply are using the chess dot com platform as an advertisement to drive traffic to their own site.
