Thank you for that. So there is a candidates tournament to play the world champion and the world champion automatically gets to defend the trophy in the final. But there are various qualifing tournaments to get to the candidates tournament.
A long way to go for me yet then! I might settle at the moment for just joining a local chess club and playing in local chess leagues!

Yes it does depend. The US championship always sent a couple to the Interzonal, but not all national championships do of course.

haha readin this made me feel like i'm a good player cause the only thing I haven't done yet on that list is beat my state's champion
