How do your chess sets accommodate pawn promotion?

Chess sets - every chess player wants one. But if all you have is 32 pieces then what do you do come time to promote a pawn? Do you just imagine that the pawn is a queen or knight etc. And if so, does this affect the player in faster games such as bullet or blitz where it could easily slip one's mind that this is in fact not a pawn.

Most sets come with extra queens, since most promotions are to queens. For rated play, stop the clocks and get a spare piece from another set, if the piece wanted isn't available from the current game.

Thank you. I own a couple of 'cheap' game night chess sets that did not come with such accessories. They weren't exactly cheap either, but that's beside the point I guess.

Well here if we have no extra Queens and the rooks have been traded then we just flip the rooks upside down and get a sign from the opponent in the moves page that it's a queen not a rook

WSama

Nice. It does sort of look like a queen too, I'm looking at it right now.

Just don't try that in a FIDE rated game. An upside down rook is still a rook. br.png

Yeah, FIDE players aren't capable of abstract concepts. wink.png

Lol, that would be one bitter player. If it wasn't my game I just might enjoy seeing that.

That's why I take the sign of my opponent

House of Chess has some well priced sets of pieces that come with extra queens if you're interested in picking up a couple and not having to deal with it.

WSama

@AngryBadgerZA, Thanks. I've come across House of Chess before while I was browsing, they have some good sets. I also came across ChessAfrica, they had quite a variety as far as price goes, but I'm not sure about the quality of the entry level wooden sets - just might be safer to go with some good Vinyl sets. I'll definitely consider those sites when it's time to add on to the 4 kiddie boards I have lying around.

@endgame347, some might say it's illegal to leave out the onions.

Does this mean that if you wished you could place the rooks upside down at the start of the game? I would guess that it would irritate some opponents.

WSama

Haha, and that's the truth. It's cool though if it's a wiener. Usually all that needs is a good sauce.
