How I Gained 193 ratings points in chess.com BLITZ in 18 days

So the point of this thread, is not to be braggy about what is a pretty modest and easy achievement.

but the point is People write ALL the time about how they Can't improve in Blitz chess.   Many are stuck at exactly the 1000-1200 range.  Having gained the 200 ratings points...

I've decided the Normal advice- (Improve in chess the ratings have to follow)- is good advice but not exactly totally true.  if you want to increase in Blitz- you have to get better at blitz itself.  8 points, 3 don'ts and 5 dos....

1 Don't resign, ALMOST NEVER.  you for sure lose if you resign, but even hopelessly down on material- you can't be sure your opponent will win.

2 Don't play game after game when you stop Losing!

3 Don't look for the BEST move.  only a good one.  make sure you see when a move Doesn't work!

4  Gain rating on a slower rating- Or go over tactic puzzle and show improvement.  be Better at tactics then you were when you sunk your rating.  ( I did both)

5  Warm up before playing rated games.  I played level 6 Titans. I'd play a couple games..get in the mood and beat it!  and then I knew I was ready...

6 play lots of game each night. many people do this well, but not Everybody!  I tryed to play 5-7 G10 games a night.

7 Know your opening - and strive to play the same openings each time you play a game.

8 Look over your past games for simple strong moves you missed.  keep it simple- tactics and hung peices.  perhaps write down a simple summary of the game you just played.

I wanted to add, that I've decided for awhile to stop the blitz.

some people just don't get this-- but Blitz (Even G10) Isn't a good time control for learning purposes.

towards the end-- the 1150-1200 group was significantly stronger than 1000-1100.  the biggest improvement?  a 1200 player didn't often resign and give up and played their game to the end.

thats a hint of what point might be one of the best.

Patently false.

You see more positions by playing blitz than any other means, you practice more technique than by any other means, and you have the opportunity to work on tactical vision and openings.  Most people play blitz impulsively, and without even the most superficial of analysis after a game, and so that is why they do not benefit from it much.  Very quickly scrolling through a game and figuring out why you won, lost, or drew, for example, makes blitz a very effective in learning.

I will never get better at blitz. I absolutely panick. I am getting slowly better at standard. There are clubs where I am rated 400 points higher than here

thegreat_patzer

well, if there was ever a person more horrible at blitz- that WOULD be news.

But I think anyone CAN get better at blitz.

I might add that time is tricky and not easily distilled to simple do/don't.don't play painfully slow and generally strive to play just a little bit faster than your opponent.

on the other hand, some people rush around SO much that trying to play faster is a bad idea!  if someone is playing very fast, play better chess- and try to checkmate with the extra material he's going to give you.

... so playing blitz is not all about playing Very fast.  that is bullet. and that is not for me.

good for you!

Find your weak spot. For me studing 1. e4 e5 for both colors was almost instant +200 points on blitz.

well… I do respect people for not resigning in lost position, simply because they are taking a courageous stand against the odds, but sometimes resigning saves people from further mental anguish. I do think that it is going to seriously harm my mental health when a person is crushing me with 2 queens, while I helplessly watch my pieces getting slaughtered left and right. Other than that, I do agree with all of your other tips.

lol.. don't look for the best move? you are crazy (no offense). do not keep things simple. try to make A lot of complications for your opponet like tal did. next thing you forgot to tell is to cover your weaknesses because your opponet can exploit them. Also never Resign? what can you tell in a position where your opponet has Bishop,Knight and a Rook and you only have your king. yep... never resign xD. i d' rather resign than being humillated with a checkmate. i can agree with your other steps but not with the things i mentoned. also playing solid opening may help.. a lot.... like the ponizani. training tactics and styding the games of great players helps.. good luck in future and best of luck in your chess wishes you

Anything under ~1900 - just try to avoid any blunders, and that's everything You'll need for that level. From my (long) experience here, any of such level players will make at least one huge blunder during blitz game.

That's why I keep floating between ~1600 and 1900.

I just gained a few hundred this 30 minutes cuz I don't usually play blitz and I'm not at my level

I appreciate All the responses, TY.

Igor please keep in mind this advice about not finding the "best move" is specific to blitz.  Normally I would Absolutely want to find the Best move.

IN fact, that is the very reason I want to switch back to a longer time control.  I think my thinking might get to simplistic if I only played blitz.

Talking about FIDE standard I can't think of better advice than to slow down Particularly on critical complicated middlegame positions and Find the Best move.  If you see a good move, Find a Better One.

... but absolutely a terrible idea in blitz. There's nothing worse than to up a queen in an absolutely won position and LOSE on time.  It did happen to me, a couple times.  some people have low blitz ratings because they absolutely play too slow.

Best of luck to all those that strive to push their blitz rating up.  it was a fun goal.

I seldom play those fast games but I tend to go for ten minutes when I do. I will try to use it to learn the pros and cons of a new line, like the Scotch Gambit. As black I sometimes play the Latvian Gambit in faster games. For me I then try to review the games, won or lost, to see what the hell might be going on and then apply my findings to slower games later. I guess I should play a few a day to practice tactics more.

Tartakower said, "No one ever won (or drew for that matter) a game by resigning."
