How does that make sense ? I just needed 3 turns to move the horse to c2 and it was a checkmate...

It's because pat tie is a type of food, and it gets stale, mate.

It's required for each side to move each turn. White can't move but isn't in check. The rules are that's a draw. At different times and places the rules used to be different, from being a draw, a loss for the stalemated player, or a loss for the stalemating player.
