How long did it take you to get a 1700+ rating?

Ive been in the 1250-1400 range for a while now and Ive been playing for almost a year and have ambition to improve. Were you ever in the 1300 range and eventually improved to a 1700+ player? What methods did you use to achieve that rating, such as reading books or analyzing games? Ive started to watch GM games such as carlsen, anand, fischer, and kasporav and started to use some openings, but never studied them in depth.

Ive seen many players at my level who have played 5000+ games and I hope I dont follow the same path. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
