I think chess.com is less popular to lichess. Lichess has on average 25k users active throughout the day so I'd guess chess.com has 15k

Whats lichess again? I heard about it before the propaganda in ben finegolds voice in his videos got to me.

Go to your stats page and look at the heading global.  The number in parenthesis is the number of active players (played at least one game in the last 90 days).  You can look this up for Daily, Rapid, Blitz, etc.  The last time that I looked, it was around 2 million for all variations of play.

Interesting

looks like we will never know.

Well, active on the forums or just active on chess.com? There are dead accounts, inactive accounts, and people have multiple accounts often. I would say about 7 million or something.

There are 20-30K people in live chess 24 hours a day.

So if the average time spent is 2 hours playing, then that's 12 x something like 25K = 300 thousand.

I did a different estimate that got about 400 thousand.

Also, not every person logs on 7 days a week to play. Lets say the average person only logs on twice a week, then we can multiply the 300K figure by 7/2 and get one million active users of the site.

Of course not everyone who comes here plays live chess, so higher than one million seems right.

I don't know about your estimate of 3 million though (maybe it's right, I don't know though).

Yeah. Chess.com should send you an email after a year of inactivity asking you if you want to keep your account

Only 1% play in the annual Tournament

I would say that could be a myth because you have to play a certain amount of daily games to play in that tournament.

Based on my percentile and numerical rank, both of which are given in my stats, the math says there are about 11 million rated and ranked players  in rapid.

That seems pretty high. But, based on the previous suggestions from 4 years ago of 1 to 3 million, I suppose it's possible it could have jumped that high from the Queens Gambit/covid combo.

This article reported that in early 2020, Chess.com forecast reaching 4 million daily users in the next 10 years.  Once the pandemic hit, they reached that level in the next few months.   After The Queen's Gambit hit,  traffic reached 6 million daily users.   As of last summer, it had dropped again to about 4 million daily users.

Is that 4 million specifically different and individual users? What I mean, is there a way they can tell if it's 4 million uses, vs. 4 million different users.

They said "daily active users".  They don't provide more detail.

After 15 years here, I take what I can get.
