How much could Anand improve becoming fit and athletic?

Does Anand work on improving his shape? If not, I think he's missing some good points.

Visawanathan Anand, deposed as World Champion in 2013, attributes much of his recent success to weight loss and renewed attention to diet; in interviews, he has commented on how the strain of travel and long games demands a tough body to get through it all.

Thank you for the reference. So, weight loss and diet but no mention to physical exercise. Chess aside, he seems a bit lazy.

And indeed, Magnus Carlsen, the current World Champion himself, maintains similar habits, at times working on his strategies while on a treadmill.

You have given no evidence to support your bad opinion of Anand's physical fitness.

Here is another article describing Anand's training routine in 2013:

“Anand has been pretty active as well,” says the Bad Sodener Zeitung. “He bought a season ticket for the swimming pool in Bad Soden and swam about 1000 metres per day. He would also run 10km every day and has also been spotted on a bicycle in the beautiful hills around Bad Soden. He lost about six kilos this summer. Most of the time, though, Anand prepared for the match in the Chess Tigers Training Centre with his seconds.”

/ Do you do that much?

Most people wont even do half of that.

Well my bad then, I didn't know about his efforts. Ten kilometres a day however seem a bit exaggerated, for how much time? He'd have a much different shape today with a similar routine.

I'm not a big fan of long distances. Now I train every other day for the 200 metres. I used to be 72 kg (~159 lbs) and 1.80 cm (~5'11) but I've gained 3/4 kg since starting this particular training. I look more muscular.

I don't eat for 6+ hours prior to training otherwise I'll throw up, and I feel nauseous anyway if I don't take a lot of time to stabilize breath between session. Overall it's very difficult.

I'm not much into chess but I train my tactics from time to time while on my cyclette for 1 hour sessions at a steady low-medium pace at a 5/8 cyclette resistance. Have a look at HIIT and BDNF, GDNF, etc...
