Hello everyone I’ve been wondering how much fulltime chess coach’s make? I would like to become one in the future once I get better at chess to start making some money and I want to know about how much I would make a month.

That is really not a very easy question to answer. Part of it depends on how well you market yourself, part how strong you are in chess, part how well you can teach, how many students you can consistently get, etc. So, the answer can be all over the place.

At my peak when i was really busy coaching i would make a few thousand a year.  But that was way to much work.

There was a time when I made more money teaching chess than I did at my day job (computer operator)... but yes, it was a lot of work.

Gotham says that anyone rated over 1500 could make lots chess coaching in New York. Guess it depends on the demand and finding out where it is

Suggest starting a local club and do some volunteer organization and coaching. To gain experience. See if coaching is a good fit for all.
Knowing well the game and your abilities is certainly one prerequisite- but learning and understanding how others learn and the necessary communication skills is a separate issue - of far greater significance than a rating.

Channels need to be opened. Lasting success is found by interested parties reaching out to a specific coach. Simply advertising wares won’t generate enough interest. People need that personal contact 1st a bit of trust in a coaches ability to relate on an individual basis.

I wouldn't recommend it as a fulltime job. You could do it part time, or during high school/college. Just curious, why do you want to pursue coaching?

That would be a good idea but I don’t have any clubs nearby. I’ve thought about doing some free coaching with beginners (U1000) to see if I like and if I’m good at it.

There are five established learning styles: Visual, auditory, written, kinesthetic and multimodal. Kinesthetic learners have to do something to get it, while multimodal learners shift between different techniques.

Next. Lessons plans and course outlines need preparing in advance- ready to be put to use. Coaching entails more time at preparation than actual instruction.
Coaching might appear glamorous- but as stated by others- it’s a lot of work if taken upon seriously, especially if $ is the object of desire.

The best coaches are of the volunteer variety.

No local clubs near by?

Start one !

I’ve started 1/2 dozen by using the right approach  to local businesses. 2 at a Starbucks, BordersBooks, a library and community center. Be creative!

The problem is I live in an RV and I’m not really anywhere that long. I have created a few clubs on chess.com though and my parents want to start taking me to different clubs on the road and hopefully OTB tournaments in the future!

I live the lifestyle myself. Very cool your planned endeavors. I live in the RV Capital of the World!

Ever get by this way perhaps I could be of assistance in pointing out opportunities.

Where i live there is a chess federation and you can get coaching level 1 or 2!

You pay a little fee and you do the exam and you get the coaching certification by the federation or you can get the coaching certification by the FIDE!

Some peoples advertize on the net like this in my city:

Obtaining a certification is excellent- and can be done on-line.

So you live in an RV too? That’s cool that we both have similar life styles!

That’s a great idea! I know on chess.com you can become a certified coach but you need an OTB rating which I don’t have at the moment but I’m planning on playing OTB soon!
