I see many people do not improve in chess  with the change of time , though they are adhere to chess palying and training.
I was one of them, An IM suggested me following tips and gradually i'am improving my chess skill.

Every discipline has its own methods and principles, Chess also has its own procedures and principles. you just need  to be systematic to improve in chess.

It is just like

    Input ---->  Processing -----> Output

So the steps behind analysis are ------

  • Identification of tactical and positional goals
  • Calculation of targets
  • Evaluation
  • Decision

Identification:

First find your plan and type of plan.

      Type of Plan ----

  • Development [Following opening theory]
  • Positioning [ Aiming at best square for the pieces ]
  • Tactical aim for piece winning [ piece connection]
  • Mate possibilty Analysis
  • Simplification [ Necessary Tradings]
  • Endgame Advantage creation [Advanced king, passed pawn, Zugzung advance etc.]
  • Pawn Promotion plan
  • Drawing Plan by Perpetual,repeatation, 50 move , stalemate, time trouble or insufficient material

Calculation:
To calculate any possibilty , you must be very systematic. This is the main point you need to be scientific. There are various kinds of schemes to calculate in various tactical position. If you know , solution is very much easy. If you do not know , then it is quite tough and time consuming.

Evaluation: After calculation of different targets, you must compare and evaluate  them properly. There are two type evaluation-- 1. Material value (Major)  2.Later  Positional Advantage (minor).

Decision: Finally you should choose the best one. This step is the part of subconscious work. you must not hesitate to decide.

Suppose

Here. Black to move.

Squares for pieces-
    [Black]

    Nb8 -> a6, c6, d7
    Bc8 -> d7 , b7
    Qd8 -> a5 , b6, c7
    Bf8  -> e7, b4
    Ng8 -> h6, e7
    Ra8 ->  ?
    Rh8 ->  ?

The Bold Squares Score best for pieces with maximum attack and defense and this is positioning. you may have find it very easy and not worthy of mentioning because you get this sense through lot of game synthesis but in 960, These common things will suffer you.

Best Squares for the Rooks are what ?

The square for an Open file or  a Pushable pawn file or behind Any endangered pawn.

# Two core things of chess---

  1. Blocks [pieces]
  2. Forces [and their controlled squares]

# Two Principles  of tactics  or Manipulation --

1. Add Force
2. Minus Force

# Four principles of positional thinking

  1. The Square [by piece] performs maximum number of attacking hits
  2. The Square [by piece] performs maximum number of defending hits
  3. The square [by piece] performs as a threat removal
  4. The square [by piece] performs as an  attack defender

There's already a scientific way of analyzing a position.  Steinitz organized the method and as follows we should (the process is actually much faster than the length and steps of the list would imply):

-Material

-More central pawns

-Passed pawns

-Weak squares and color complexes

-Healthier pawn structure

-Superior minor piece

-Queenside pawn majority

Dynamics:

-Vulnerable enemy piece

-Superior coordination

-Central control

-Rank file and/or diagonal control

-Space advantage.

-King safety

Taking these all into account a plan is formulated, a weakness is only a weakness if it can be exploited.  After finding the best plan we calculate candidate moves to ensure they don't have a tactical refutation and we can go along with our plan (or prevent theirs if critical enough)

Then follow him, become great like him Undecided

Actually we need to be specific and organized, not scatterd

brekker23

thank you for the clear cut explanation! do you have any advice as to how to improve the speed at which you follow these steps?

brekker23

or just any general advice really. i'm sure it's literally all useful!
