I've been stuck around the 1400 to 1500 level and can't seem to get any higher. What should I be focusing on?

Tactics, practice, OTB games and YouTube. That got me to 1800 (chess.com rating)

Are you referring to an established OTB rating, or chess.com rating?

BronsteinPawn

Yeah. Win. Just like me

Sometimes you gotta help people improve by creating great threads.

robertjames_perez

win!! I am trying to win, even if I can't reach ratings higher than 1500  (but my rating on my country is 1900+)

Whatever you're doing to try and improve, vary it. Playing, tactics puzzles, book study, etc are all necessary parts of improvement. Lots of people focus only on one area and ignore others.

Just as importantly, get some stronger players to look at a few of your recent losses. They can give you advice as to where you're screwing up and what you need to work on the most.

GM Wesley So averaged about 55 points per year for 12 years to get to 2800. The fastest route to 1800 is to play players rated 1100 and below ONLY. Lots of game. Good luck. Kidding aside, players1800 rated and up are advance players who have a very good grasp of openings, mid games and end games. Their tactics are disciplined and play with patience. I have a 1475 + rating and I play with them once in a while. Study, play...a lot. Good luck.

I'm guessing you haven't read any books.

Strategy, tactical puzzles, endgames, and annotated game collection are some categories. Pick a book with good reviews, buy it, and read it.

Use a database and an engine to go over all the games you play.

As I've said before, play over many master games on your chessboard (Paul Morphy) and FFS

Paul Morphy will just downgrade your chess skill.

Get a book from more classical soviet players.

BronsteinPawn

Look up for Rashid Nezhmetdinov's game collection if you want something Morphystic but with actual chess quality games.

"... there are major advantages to studying older games rather than those of today.

The ideas expressed in a Rubinstein or Capablanca game are generally easier to understand. They are usually carried out to their logical end, often in a memorable way, ...

In today's chess, the defense is much better. That may sound good. But it means that the defender's counterplay will muddy the waters and dilute the instructional value of the game.

For this reason the games of Rubinstein, Capablanca, Morphy, Siegbert Tarrasch, Harry Pillsbury and Paul Keres are strongly recommended - as well as those of more recent players who have a somewhat classical style, like Fischer, Karpov, Viswanathan Anand and Michael Adams. ..." - GM Andrew Soltis (2010)

This is the first time I completely agree with you.

How to get 1500 rating point in real

Honest opinion, i have been fluctuating between 2000-2100 and i would say the biggest difference between a 1400 and 1800 would be the tactical awareness and positional understanding, learn 1-2 openings for white and black and master them.Use the tactics here as well and analyze your games using an engine. To be honest 1800's aint all that strong, they make several istakes and hang pieces every game thus meaning it is not as big of a jump then going from 1800-2200
