How to find a game which had a particular position?

Hi,

I was looking for a game that I had played with black where I had a bishop on c5 and his bishop had the knight on f6 pinned. I moved the knight to capture on e4, the opponent capture the queen and then I delivered # with Bxf2.

Thats all I remember from the game. I don't know who it was against or when it was played. Is there anyway to filter out games so that I could find that game on the site.

You could use Explorer if you can think of what opening it might have been to narrow it down somewhat.

If you use the website browser, you see the final position when you scroll over the games in your archive. Going through your archive could take a while since you've played at least 7500 games but I would bet you could do the whole thing in a couple of hours.

The big databases like Chessbase have the ability to search by position but even there I think you have to have the complete position, not just a few pieces of it. I'm not sure.

If you have a PGN file of your games, you could import the PGN file into Scid or Scid vs. PC, then search for material/pattern. You can tell Scid to search for any game where there is a white bishop on d8, a black knight on e4, a black bishop on f2, and a white king on e1 (or g1, whichever was the case). That would probably find it.

(I tried it using GorgoBase, and it came up with 5 games with the white king on g1 (no mates), and 8 games with the white king on e1 (1 mate).

This is not the game, but the description reminds me of this game from Discovering Chess Openings. I think minor variations of this game have appeared in books for maybe a century or so.

Hi,

You might find chessfinder.org useful for this. It allows you to search for games based on partial information about the position, a functionality not currently available on chess.com. Give it a try to locate your memorable game!
