How to get an official Elo (just starting out)

Hi folks,

I currently reside in Des Moines, Iowa in the USA. I've always been a casual chess player but of late chess.com has whetted my appetite for the game and I want to get better at it and keep improving. Aside from competing on chess.com I would like to play over the board more often and also get an official ELO rating.

Any pointers on how I can get started? Do I have to take part in FIDE rated tournaments. Can unrated players do that or do they have to somehow reach a certain level of play before being given an ELO rating?

oh, and also what are some of the best books out there that I can read. I'm not an absolute beginner...just a novice who dreams of having a master norm many years from now :)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

to get the FIDE rating you have to join FIDE rated tourneys, mostly these are open tournements and so the fact you don't have a rating shouldn't matter.

The alternative would be just to get a US rating, which i believe is easier to get.

I think a USCF rating would be the way to start, to get one you need to join the USCF and play in rated games and/or tournaments.

In my country, there are no FIDE rated tournaments (nowadays). What should I do then?

In order to get an official FIDE rating there are a couple of requirements

-Firstly you need to be a member of your countrys chess federation (in your case USCF), the simplest way to do this is through a local chess club

-then you need to play at least 5 games in a FIDE rated tournament, furthermore the average rating of the tournament has to exceed 1000 and you have to score at least 1/2 point.

And thats all, hope this was helpful. Good luck!

Then You will have to play in an international tournament. Or ask on of you contrys organizers to organize a Fide-rated tournament.

You may have to travel to Serbia or Hungry. Turkey to Serbia via night train seems like a long trip, but the price is quite reasonable.

Of course there are but just you need to reach 1600 national points to enter elo tournaments

If you are still playing, you can check this link: https://www.tsf.org.tr/kaynaklar/sampiyonalar/acik-turnuvalar

Our federation usually organizes these open tournaments on summer months and unfortunately with the new rule which have been brought last year, you need to reach 1600 national points. If you don't want to do that, then you need to play in Age Groups Championship(just like i did on the last week and expecting to start with an elo of 1542 or smth lol) or Turkey Cup Championship.
