How to get free chess database?

I just want to improve my strategic play and technique, possibly learn some openings and their basic strategic ideas in the process.  I am currently using stockfish 7 in the Tarrasch GUI, but this is only useful for finding my tactical and positional errors as opposed to strategic etc..  Ideally, I would just buy chessbase but I have no money and I've heard that you can just make your own chess database finding games online etc. but I'm just a bit confused how to do this.  I've heard that SCIDvsPC is a good program to use, but I'm still confused with regards to getting a database.

Before i purchased Chessbase 13 (I would highly reccommend it) I used to use the free software ChessDB, and then would download the weekly games from theweekinchess.com.

Scid is ok, don't need to buy chessbase.
