How to get from 1400 rating to 1600?

Work on your most basic weakest link.  1400's still play plenty of hope chess and here's what Heisman says about class C:

-Double check key lines

-Do lots of basic tactical problems.  CT-ART 5.0 has a beginner program included in the package.

-Don't skip steps in the move decision process.  Evaluate, assess, then calculate.

-Candidate moves need to fit the position's needs.  If you are winning you usually want to simplify down (unless you throw away an important source of your winning advantage, this you determine through assessment, such as exchanging rooks from a won rook ending to a drawn pawn ending)

Take a look here http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/improvement-in-chess-according-to-elo

Ok, I checked out bgianis's link and TBOG's. Is just tactics the way to get better?

play long games and use the time to think, the better the analast the better the player. get yourself used to tons of calculation, just look at the great players in their prime all of them calculated like mad.

the way I see it if kasparov beat other GM's by seeing more lines then they did, then certainly you or I could be competitive with a 1600 on here.

Judging from your rating in live standard I see that we are about at the same level. I have suffered many crushes because of my lack in tactical patterns. My real life rating is much lower than on this site. So, yes it is important to improve in tactics, at least at our level. I found a proposal for this book in another forum which explains how to improve in visualization and I am thinking if I should give it a try. The sample pages displayed on the site look quite interesting.

I don't get it. I have been solving problems and practising openings and the endgame since 2 years. WHy do I still not improve?

You can follow the link in comment #7. When you see the book click on it and you can read some of the pages for free. Since the writer is someone who improved as an adult all the advice will be very useful. What he says about tactics after page 41 is to choose a 1000 and solve them 7 times, every time in a shorter cycle than before. I also found 2 videos entitled "how to use tactics in YOUR games" on this site. I watched both and found them very instructive. The GM says that you can solve many tactics, but you have to know how to make them happen in your games. He suggests the ways to do it.

I got from 1400 to 1600 Blitz by better understanding of positional chess.

You can do tactics all day long but if you never get good positions you will not be able to use your ability to do tactics.

BluePotato

I tried the De La Maza's book. What do I do?

ive been playing 4 years and im awfull(just thought you should know#)

BluePotato

So I should stop playing hope chess and analyze every move before playing. It will need more time, but the moves will be more desicive.

BluePotato

Here is a game that I won today. I'll post my thoughts, but could a strong player analyze?

Tactics...tactics...tactics.

End game study

Candidate moves - learning to recognize them, and calculating them out

Forcing moves - Checks, captures, threats.  Always look for forcing moves first, as they are the easiest moves to calculate.

bgianis

Your ratings are like mine in online and standard. If I judge from myself, yes tactics are necessary. I stopped playing blitz and reduced my rapid games, in order to play slowly with standard control time and think more about every move.

gregorystodolsky

just figured out the magical way to go from 1400 up....let your opponent make the mistakes. Just dont make mistakes! No brilliant strategies, no radical combinations..just dont do anything wrong! 1600 here I come!

Just don't do anything wrong he says
