How to get from 1600 to 1700

This is the rating gap that I’m struggling with most. Anybody have any advice on how to reach 1700? Thanks

like many others will say, no real secret... Just put in more effort. Learn your openings more. Make sure to know rook endgames thoroughly. Learn middlegame strategy for different positions. Learn common ideas in your openings.

Not necessarily in that order.

consistency is what got me there... just play and think through each move... don't blunder and boom 1700... also PUZZLES PUZZLES PUZZLES mostly puzzle rush/battle and the like though.

similar barrier between 1800-1900 for me.

And you also can't expect to keep improving relying on digital tools only. You can't have a phone around all the time. Make sure to have some good books as well. Nimzowitsch's "Chess praxis" is very good, as is anything by Jerry Silman.

"How to become a candidate master" by Dunne can help you even if you're not anywhere near class A.

Logical Chess by Chernev doesn't have a single bad review as far as i can see, except that some analysis may be outdated.

I think it is puzzles (rated 1700 or higher). I've never gotten to 1700 but I have heard grandmasters give this advice (echoing Ninja).

just based off of the games we've played, you're way too wild with your pawns. We had one game where you threw out h4 and g4 and then castled short with the center open. Another where you just lost all of your kingside pawns with your king right there. Just learning how to keep a solid structure will probably help you instrumentally

Hi Nimzo, Are you trying to get Rapid or bullet to 1700 (or both)?

I noticed you were a bit slow-to-move in the two blitz games we played on Saturday. Maybe go for 1700 in Rapid (instead of bullet) and play with an increment or at least 15 minutes of initial time. Choosing time controls that are favorable for you can make a ~100 point difference (at least 30 or 40 points)

I’m trying to get to 1700 rapid. Bullet is just for fun. And I was slow because I was trying to type in the tournament chat at the same time ha ha.

The one where I castled Isn’t justified. But the first game was because I slipped Rg8! I had to make that move useful so I tried to get an attack.

Thanks, those are useful.

I really need to try to read more chess books. I’ve only read “100 endgames you must know.”

ngl that is probably one of the less useful books I've seen. It is still good, but there are just a lot more fundamentals you should learn before buying a book that sounds like a online quiz.

Just play more... That part is so underrated for improvement.

I play more, and have not really improved much in online chess. Conversely, when I did improve the most, is when I spend more time studying than playing bullet chess.

What does you mean with your  "analysis may be "outdated"?

How can it be... if some analysis is right?

I think this advice may be good for me also.

I understood it already. If one wants to become a good Chess player then he must learn making a good positional moves in the middle-game.

Now I think so.

Train tactics.

Gain 100 points. This might seem complicated, but your goal should be to make the difference between your rating and 1700 equal zero.
We can find your current difference by subtracting 1700 from your rating. (1600-1700=-100).
This shows that you’re rating is 100 points shy of your goal. We can assume you need a hundred Elo points to reach 1700. But why assume when you can check your work? (1600+100=1700) So there you have it. Hope this helps.
