Take a set and play over a game from a book until somebody shows up and challenges you.
How to start a game in a park?

Hello folks, I am fairly new to chess and am in LOVE with it. I was wondering how many of you guys ever went out to a public park and played chess with a random person, and did you bring your own equipment? I live in houston and there are a few parks around but none ive seen have chess boards. And so i was wondering one day bringing a chess set and set up at a coffe table..however I reach my own stalemate. I would not know what to do after that, would i just sit untill someone offers to play or what? Any advice on playing public games, etc?
I play in the park every weekend if the weather does not suck. I bring my own board (just in case) but i use a park in london where it is common for people to play chess, so there is plenty there and most the time I will chose who to play with so my board is not necessary.
Otherwise, I set it up and wait. Read a book so you do not look so strange.

Go to the library with your chessboard and see if you can find any chess books and go through one, or set up the board at a table and read a magazine and wait .
Go to the food court at a shopping mall and set up your board. Some food courts even have so called chess tables there, you just need the pieces. Heck you might even get a date.

Just walk around, with one hand raised in the air, and at full volume, shout "CHESS GAME? ANYBODY FOR A CHESS GAME?"

The sign might say "your move"
Your body language is important, make eye contact with people who pass by, and if they look like they may be interested nod your head. If you want research body language, go to a dance and watch how a girl who wants to dance acts.
Start your own online petition as I did: https://www.petitions24.com/chesstables
It was signed by Susan Polgar, Hikaru Nakamura and also Jorden van Foreest (GM and Winner of Dutch National Championship 2016). I contacted the newspapers https://www.ad.nl/utrecht/steun-van-ver-over-de-grens-voor-schaaktafels-in-het-maximapark~ab5be0b4/ and was interviewed by the radio. With this I convinced the City Council to place chess tables in our local park! So, copy/paste the approach and you're closer to having chess tables in your park. Best regards, J.
