ok so i went on aimchess and long story short i'm not at my best play ('in a slump' according to aimchess)

yes look at all the danger signs in all its glory . _.

anyways the thing that caught my attention was they said my counterplay was a bit lower than people of my rating. I never really didn't take consideration when gotham talked about the 'nice counterplay' in his low elo videos or any video in that matter. can someone tell me how to effectively use counterplay? I think it'd really help in bullet and most likely in blitz. or should i focus on something else idk

and yes this is a 1500 asking this as a serious question

That's another chess page?:v

I don’t understand the question exactly, it’s not very clear. Are you asking how to attack and exploit weaknesses?

Counterplay is the same thing as regular play. The important distinction is whether or not you're trying to directly diffuse / defend against your opponent's play. Counterplay means you're going to generate threats of your own in a different area instead of directly defending against your opponent's ideas. This often starts with a pawn break to open lines.

For example the classic advice of meeting an attack on the flank with play in the center.

The opposite is also true... if you want your attack on their castled king to be stronger it's nice to have a locked center.

I'm not sure most players at 1500 blitz level understand the concept of "play" so I think this is a very reasonable question for you to ask.

The basic idea is there are natural advantages (so to speak). Sort of like having the high ground advantage in a fight. It's just something that benefits one person over the other.

In chess your natural advantage comes from having more space in an area (in this case "space" meaning more squares behind your pawn chain) or more pieces.

This is where the standard advice of "attack in the direction your main pawn chain points" comes from. It's telling the player to seek play in the area (kingside or queenside) where their central pawn chain affords them more space.

Other reasons you might choose to seek play in an area include there are targets like weak pawns, loose pieces, or a weak king.

When highly mobile pieces come into contact with weak pawns, king, etc, that's active pieces. That's "play." That's basically what chess is all about. (Mobility and space are important because it means you'll be able to shift your pieces around to generate new threats faster than the defenders can react... which is yet another bit of classic advice).

One extremely popular way here is to turn on the engine when you start losing. =(
(especially at "'nice counterplay' in his low elo videos" ratings)
