How well should I do in the U1000 division?

I plan on competing in the King's Island Open in a couple weeks and I was wondering if anyone could give me an estimate on how well i should do.  My Chess.com live rating is 1400+ and my online rating is 1369 after one game.  Does the fact that both ove these are well over 1000 mean that I have a good chance of doing well at the U1000 division?

Yeah you should be too strong for an U1000.

The only rating you have is your live standard.  (1 game doesn't reliably give you a realistic rating no matter who you are).

To me Live standard is the oddest rating on chess.com  I see titled players who are rated 1500 and 1600 after many games.  So what is 1400?  Well you're not cheating :)  And I'd guess that's also quite a bit stronger than 1000 OTB rating (e.g. USCF).

I'd guess that you'll win all your games if you play to the extent of your ability.

You should play U1600...

OTB chess is different from online rapid

No, I don't agree.

OTB, play in the lowest section you qualify for. If you win this, you probably wont qualify to play in it again. Winning low sections is far better for your confidence than getting annihilated in strong ones.

There's always next time...

Will it limit his rating though at all?

I mean, is it better rating-wise to go undefeated against sub-1000 players or to win most of your games against 1600s?

For example, 6-0 (<1000) vs. 3-2-1 (<1600)

In the example above, which player would have the higher rating?

DrCheckevertim

He won't get annihilated in u1600. Assuming he doesn't play much worse OTB than online, his OTB rating is probably 1600 or greater. Sealed

Live standard ratings in this range are 100-300 points below otb ratings.

I think he may be able to play up to u1800 , thats the section I used to play in.  I did pretty good in it, I got 3rd once, and almost got the game of the tournament, because of a Queen sac I did, just to get a good position.

People 1200 on here can be pretty dang good. He may not win all his games, but he will probably win a couple games at least. He definitely should get a few draws.

Playing u1000, only if he really has never played before, he probably would beat everyone in it unless he blunders. He could also play in the u1600, and he will do better than the u1800 of course. People's games I review on this site, even a smidgen over 1000 can be very good. I have seen quite a few, play way over their level. Regardless, Good luck.

I don't think you have anything to fear if this is how an over 1000 can get crushed:

Tactics, while important, aren't as important as technique.  You have to know how to win certain won positions and converting advantages is a skill in itself.

Play in the U1000 while you can

Good luck at Kings Island, i will be there and if i can remember it i will check to see how you are doing. I know there is a difference in the Entry fee in the under 1000 as opposed to the under 1250 so i don't know if that is a factor in your case. The prize fund for the under 1250 is a little bit betterso that may come into play as well. This will be my third year playing in this tourn. and i find it a lot of fun hope you enjoy it as well.I will probably play in the under 1900 this year but no matter which section you play in some of the players play well above their rating so just be careful.

Markle

Just a friendly piece of advice, i checked out your USCF results and i know you have only played a couple of tourn. but i see in the last one you lost to acouple of kids rated around 800 and your current USCF rating is around 600 if i renenber correctly. I am not saying that is a bad thing as i know scholastic players often are stronger then their ratings but just don;t let anyone talk you into playing up in a section beyond your ability, you won't enjoy the tourn. and can be very rough playing 5 games where you are out of your class. anyway as i said before good luck with whichever section you choose and i will see you there

Thanks for all the input, I figured I would throw a few more details in here.  The time control is g/75 I think.  I play better otb than online though I don't know why, and I also play better in slower time controls.  Otb in a slower time control I have been able to pull off victories against the first board player on my school team(1232 USCF also competing in the tournament) and the teams coach(~1100)  Thanks for all your comments Markle, maybe we can meet and spar at some point between rounds.  My USCF rating kind of sucks because I wasn't quite prepared for the tournament experience at that point but like I said up there, I've been beating my coach and the first board player, among others, in the 1200 area so I'm hoping this time that I'll be better prepared for the experience and not all jittery haha.

I ended up scoring 4/5 with two draws and three wins, four way tie for second place.  I think my rating will break 1000 after this tournament and the last scholastic one I played!
